Thanks for all the help. I'll do a fresh install of win xp 32 bit and see if that makes a difference. All of these parts were working fine in my system so i've got my fingers crossed its software.

EDIT:

Just got off the phone with my friend and he said another thing it does is sometimes when he tries to shut it down he'll get a BSOD and the computer will restart instead. Any ideas about that one?

Check the System Event Viewer in Windows for Disk Errors. I've found momentary pauses like that that don't require reboots are usually HDDs about to see the white light.

So I solved the problem. It was a bad SATA connection between the mobo and the DVD drive. I just changed SATA ports from #2 to #4 and viola, no more lockups. Weird eh?
