Default Please help me fix friend's computer (that I built)

So I built a computer for a friend using my old parts, it consisted of:

MSI P6N SLI
E6550 2.3GHz C2D
4 GB Corsair XMS DDR 2 800Mhz
500 GB Western Digital Blue
EVGA 9800 GTX+
Samsung DVD combo drive.
550w Rosewill PSU

I installed Windows XP Professional 64-bit and gave it to him, not OC'd everything on stock. Now he's saying that it will lockup randomly for between 5 seconds and 5 minutes then go back to normal. The way he described the lockups it sounds like the frozen screens you get with a bad OC (looped sounds mouse/keyboard frozen) except that he doesn't have to reboot it goes away on its own.

I'm stumped why this could be happening. Could it be faulty hardware? Or is it more likely a software issue that a fresh install of XP could fix? I'm going home this weekend to look at it for him but I've got no idea what could be wrong as of now.

Lockup when doing something CPU/GPU intensive?

Or at anything?

He said that it would mostly happen in Windows Explorer, Firefox, and Word. So I don't think it could be a GPU issue or an overheating/PSU problem.

When I built it I just took the mobo out of my case with the CPU and RAM already installed and just put it in his case then connected everything.

Have him run memtest86 to see if its the RAM, RAM is the most likely source of faulty hardware in most cases.

Also, try for a new install of windows

Possible driver issue? If it were overclocked than that is what i would have first suspected.

The drivers is what I first thought of with the looping sound. I would re-install/repair the sound and chipset drivers. You said you just did a fresh install of xp. I was doing some maintenance on my wifes system the other day and after the service pack install the network card driver would not start up right. so ran a repair of the driver and back up and running. if it was a fresh insatll and you had the drivers in prior to updates, I would look at sound and chipset drivers before thinking it is a hardware problem as you also said you pulled it out of your case and into his case, I would assume you never had a problem with it doing that when you had it. hope you get it working.
please post back if you fix the problem, and let us know what fixed it.

Do a memtest, and make note of the MB beep code.

Could faulty RAM cause lockups that would resolve themselves with rebooting?
