Default system shutting down

My son have a E-machine W6409 computer running Win.XP Just stock. The cpu fan is so loud, and it seems like the rpm increases and decreases at times. Once I thought it was the hard drive. I have a power supply and took the fan out and put it on the cpu. It still shuts down but not has often. I would like to think that it is over heating but I there is no temp monitoring device on it. should I just get a new cpu fan? any suggestions?

Get some TIM, apply it to the heatsink, get a new fan, or even better a new heatsink with TIM and a new fan.

Definitely consider getting a new heatsink. Take the current heatsink off, and remove the CPU, and clean both the CPU and the heatsink bottom with rubbing alcohol. Then apply some new TIM like Arctic Silver 5 which you can get at Radioshack.

Apply a little bit on the cpu in the center, and place the heatsink on top of it, and move the heatsink to the left and right and then fasten the heatsink back on.

I'd would recommend cleaning the case out of all dirt/dust. Clean all the parts with the apporitate material. But what from the people suggested above is get TIM and maybe a cheap heatsink and add those. Also make sure all connections are secured too.
