Just to clear up some junk I read on the first page:

You can SLI with the i5. 8x vs. 16x is almost negligible. I remember seeing an EVGA rep post the difference which was about a few hundred points in Vantage which translates into a 1-2 FPS difference?

I would try to find the post but I've got to be at work in 10 minutes.

I will be going i5 around Christmas time for a gaming rig as well.

also keep in mind people, that i WILL be overclocking and I5/I7(1156) i heard are good overclockers, the motherboard i might get is probably the EVGA P55 SLI OR LE.

As for my q9550,the 4.0ghz barley make it,anytime it can fail maybe since it barley made it,and the 750i,i heard, sucks alot for overclocking and now im understanding why...the vdroop problems, having to adjust the GTL,the northbridge heatsink that the fan blows onto the GPU....

i am pretty much sick of the 750i and i cant go any farther of my oc,i can probably if i have good cooling(which i have the megahalems, and i will be getting 2 HQ fans for the megahalems)but the motherboard i have right now(750i)doesnt let me and also,if i adjust ONE SINGLE THING on my BIOS it quickly goes unstable that it wont boot at all and the vdroop is the one on my nerves alot....

I would not, here's chart I have been making in another thread.

Google Spreadsheet

Look at the i5 at 3.6 and the Q9550 at 3.5, not much of a difference if any.

http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1060/13/. As you can see your cpu does almost the same as the i5 750. Is there really a point in upgrading. Also be share to check out the other tests. Also the intel i9 will be released probably after Christmas and is probably going to hell of a expensive cpu.

And you think 4.2ghz with an i5 is going to be a big difference from your Q9550 @ 4ghz? It isn't. I wouldn't even consider going from your setup to an i5 as an upgrade.

If you're going to upgrade, it would be to an i7 because of it's 8 threads. An i7 D0 at 4.2ghz will be an actual upgrade from your current CPU.

P55 boards cannot do x16 x16 SLI or Crossfire.
