If you have a Q9550 @ 4.0Ghz, it's pure stupidity to go to a Core i5 set up at the moment. You'll probably gain 10% at maximum during heavy encoding and nothing while gaming. Not a good upgrade.

I had a q9550 before going i5 (microcenter let me return my q9550 setup for an i5 setup) and the performance was not that noticeable. Now the encoding, extracting files, renderings, etc gain quite a bit of boost. My encoding went up about 25% (both were at 4ghz). But if you could sell the q9550 stuff for 1/2 the cost of the i5 setup I would do it. I went i5 because it was cheaper then the q9550 rig I had just built but both are great processors, the q9550 overclocked a little easier.
