If this computer means that much to you, sell the 965 on eBay and buy a 920 D0. The 965 is an older architecture (C0) which needs higher volts and doesn't OC as high as the newer D0 architecture of the 920 and 975.

If you get a B batch D0 you can get to 4.4 easy. If you get a 3845B or 3849B you can get to 4.7+.

If you stick with the C0 you're probably limited to 4.2 or so (and out a couple of hundred bucks.)

I agree with all of that except your numbers...

even most b batch D0's will never see 4.4. 4.0-4.2 is reasonable.

No I7 currently will hit 4.7ghz without using some sort of sub ambient cooling like phase or LN2 or Dice. On water if you can hit 4.4-4.5 you are very lucky.

and Very few C0 chips will get above 4.0 ghz. there are some shining examples of chips that will, but they are rare.

OP

A good idea would be to sell that 965 and get a 930 or a 920.(replacing 920).
I have an "A" batch i7 920 & I can easily get over 4.6GHz on air with cas 7 1T ,oc'd DRAM @1800MHz , SLI.
Oh, and thats with a decent vcore.
So heres the proof>

Luck of the draw on an A or B chip. & a little overclock experience will get you there.

good luck

next time, use the permalink button, that did not even link me to the right page in that thread. i did find it though.

and you claim that is on air? can you do me a favor and post a pic of what your temps are? and I am assuming since that was for a benchmarking run that that was not entirly stable...

what can you get stable with at least 20 runs of linx with a problem size over 25000? oh, and with real temp open in the background so you know what you are putting your chip through.

Good choice. :-)

keep in mind that you cannot find those batches in stores anymore. they can be found used, but typically they will also come with price tags between $300 and $400.
