Default i7 965 good stable overclock

Thanking all for reading this.

I just got a i7 965 & it's my 1st i7. Got it coz it's cheaper than i7 975. Somehow ppl says that it's not worth it. Anyway that damage being done so just have to make max usage of it.

My new rig:
i7 965
Asus Rampage II Extreme
6GB Domanitor-GT 1866Mhz
Coasair HX1000w
2x SLi GTX275
80GB SSD X25M-34N
360 SATA HDD
Silverstone TJ07

Watercooling:
Swiftech Apogee XT
Feser X-Changer QUAD 480 Extreme Performance Radiator (4x 120mm)
Swiftech MCP655 12v DC Pump
Bitspower Water Tank Z-Multi 250
***Water cooling only run trough CPU & the Full Motherboard chips sets. Not getting Graphic Card as I waitting for the GTX 300 series

Q1:
High of overclock should I target for? I mean for a max stable 24/7 usage.
Having 5.0 to 5.2Ghz on my mind, am I being greedy?

Q2:
What's the max & safe voltage/tempreature for i7 965. Just assuming that my water cooling can handell it.

Q3:
Should I get another 12GB or 6GB? 12GB really helps?

Q4:
How far can the ram goes? stock is C7 1866Mhz. Can do C7 2000Mhz or C6 1866Mhz & stable?

Q5:
Should I overclock for higher Mhz or lower timing for the rams?
Thinking of 6GB high Mhz, 12GB lower timings.

I'm trying to go almost to the extreme. Not that I'm super rich. It's my last birthday gift for being SINGLE. Getting MARRIED soon. Don't know what's comming in life so I'm gonna get a SUPER PC.

Thanks to all. Sincerely thanks again... This PC means alot to me...

PS: Anyone asking "Why 2x SLi with that kind of rig?" Well... I'm waitting for the GTX300 series

Q1. Maybe 4.5GHz if you're lucky.

Q2: I wouldn't go above 1.3625.

Q3: 6GB is fine.

Q4: Just trial and error.

Q5: I'd go higher mhz

12 GB of ram will kill your OC. Stick with 6 + higher frequencies. And 5.0-5.2 isn't really possible for 24/7

I had a 965 in my sig rig (P6T Deluxe), on a feser quad and GTz.

Q1:
High of overclock should I target for? I mean for a max stable 24/7 usage.
Having 5.0 to 5.2Ghz on my mind, am I being greedy?

I could not get mine 100% stable at any voltage I was comfortable with beyond 4.24. I backed it off to 4.0 for every day use to keep volts down.

Q2:
What's the max & safe voltage/tempreature for i7 965. Just assuming that my water cooling can handell it.

Define safe? Temps below 70C for me, voltage, who knows.

Q3:
Should I get another 12GB or 6GB? 12GB really helps?

As the memory controller is on the CPU, more RAM should impact your OC. I used 12GB of Patriot 1600, however.

Q4:
How far can the ram goes? stock is C7 1866Mhz. Can do C7 2000Mhz or C6 1866Mhz & stable?

There is no benefit to going beyond 1600, at least for me.

Q5:
Should I overclock for higher Mhz or lower timing for the rams?
Thinking of 6GB high Mhz, 12GB lower timings.

Again, 1600 is already brutally fast. I think I was nudging 30GB/s throughput?? The 965 lets you run 6.5GT/s on the QPI stock, which is 50% more than the (stock) 920..

No.

That's the MAXIMUM VID (VCC) state you will receive on your chip! This includes VID "states" for C1E, C-States, speedsteps (each multi probably), and of course, non-power saving state VID states. You are looking for the maximum voltage, which can be found in the spreadsheet under maximum and minimums. IIRC, the maximum is 1.55, but if that is not what your chip needs, it will degrade faster. Anything higher, iirc it will degrade much faster than the maximum rating.

I still don't get why everybody thinks that's the maximum voltage, and its the max voltage before it degrades.

I'd shoot for something like 4.2, but you might be able to get higher

Q2:

I don't think voltage is much of an issue with i7's compared to heat. TJMax is 100c. In my experience, even with watercooling heat is the main thing to be concerned about when ocing.

Q3:
Should I get another 12GB or 6GB? 12GB really helps?

12gb has little to no use unless you photoshop or use some kind of texture rendering software daily

Q4:
How far can the ram goes? stock is C7 1866Mhz. Can do C7 2000Mhz or C6 1866Mhz & stable?

I've seen cas7 2000 before, not sure about 6

A higher cpu clock has more benefits in the real world. If your memory is clocked too high, triple channel starts losing it's benefits. You'd have to google more about that though

I know you don't want to hear this, and probably already have, but i would sell your 965 on amazon for however much you can get for it and buy a 920 and use the extra money for some other nice upgrades. (3 gtx385's maybe)

I made the same mistake when i built my rig and got a 940. I soon found that it would not go above 3.8 ghz no matter what. i sold it for $450 and bought a used 920 here for $200.

The truth of it is that unless you are using phase change, LN2, or Dry ice to cool the chip the OC limits for all I7's are the same. Because of the way the architecture works you will be limited most by your Temps or your Vcore. both of which are the same for 920, 940, 950,965, and 975.

with that said, the only way having the unlocked multipliers will really help is if you can get around those two blocks using some form of extreme cooling.

So again, make yourself even happier and sell that chip and upgrade something else. :-)

have you not done any stability testing? try running prime 95 for 10 hours.

if it is unstable at all, even if it does not crash, it will degrade your chip and you will eventually have problems. if it is not stable then there are free electrons jumping all over the place in your processor and they will eventually build up small deposits that will cause it to short out and be gone for good. :-(
