Pondering whether to buy a motherboard or a CPU first for my backup rig.
It's currently running an OEM board made by ATi with no overclocking options, supports 800MHz FSB Chips and 667 RAM -as it was part of a pre-built computer by Acer. However it's also running a Pentium D 820, and I find them disgustingly slow. I know it makes sense to upgrade the motherboard first, but I won't benefit anything until I get a new chip for it. You may also suggest a CPU or a Micro ATX motherboard, as it saves me running through pages of reviews to find something suitable. £40 max on either. ($50-60)

If you plan on doing more upgrades later on down the road, I would start with a motherboard. Now if you dont really plan on upgrading much more, then I would say get a new cpu.

wait on it, buy your equipment at the same time, it will only be cheaper later... unless you come across and insane deal/sale i would never part out a system build

9600 GT is good, up grab a E6XXX/e7000 (possibly e5XXX if you don't use virtualization) series or save up for a e8400 if you can.

E2xxx will suffice, it's only a backup rig for light gaming, source games, possibly cod4 on lower settings.
