Default I want your opinion

I have started looking around for my future desktop and I would like to hear some solid opinions and recommendations. I usually spend a heck of a lot of time scanning reviews and sites for things I want to buy, and I plan to do the same for this comp, however there are plenty of things I need to take into consideration here and I don't know really where to start.

However, here is what I have for now:

The CPU will be the I7 920 (for some good overcloking )
GPU most likely the Nvidia GTX 285.
I want a fair amount of RAM (no clue which).
A one TB hardrive (no clue which).

And now the rest I have no clue.... No clue what MOBO, case, cooling, monitor... all this basic stuff.

I don't want this to cost me a fortune. The GPU and CPU I will be getting as gifts and I think I am looking at about 1K extra for the other components. I might even get one more component gifted (if cost is about 300-400$) (I'm thinking MoBo).

Thanks to all in advance

Most of your questions are going to be answered if you can tell us what you are going to be using your PC for, eg gaming, folding, video processing, OCing??

Rather than tell you what I think would be good, have a look at the various sig rigs on this forum and then research the gear. You will have a better understanding on what will work for you.

why get a gtx 285 when you can get an hd 5870 for a few dollars less and the 5870 is DX11 and outperforms it

Yea, sorry for not specifying that, I am primarily going to use the computer for gaming and looking to Overclock after a little while.

Any suggestions are good, the reason for for the GTX 285 was because I didn't really know what else to get XD. I am really beginner here, thanks for the suggestion of for the HD

I just found the build logs! So I will be looking there for my info.

If anyone has anymore suggestions, that would be great, but I think I will be fine scanning through the build logs for info.

Getting a pair of WD 640 Caviar Blacks and putting them in RAID will give you ~1.2 TB usable space and be very fast.

I'd also recommend the HD 5870 for right now. If you go ATI, try to get a Crossfire MB and if you go nVidia, go with a SLI MB. That will leave you options for multi-GPU setups in the future.

Excellent! When you have the specs you like please come back and ask for opinions and see if anyone has any further experience with the gear. Be aware that everyone has their own soft spot for things like CPUs and GFX cards, so you may get swamped with info.... most of it will be subjective.
