Hey guys, it's been a while. First of all, thanks for helping me with this
I haven't been keeping up with technology lately (*gasp*), so I need some more help. First important note. This machine will not be overclocked. Everything will be stock. So I have $1500 for a data acquisition machine. There will be a lot of programs open at once doing many things. So lots of memory and memory bandwidth is important. Harddrive speed is also important, I was thinking solid state for OS and programs, and maybe even a scratch drive for data acquisition. The programs being run can be computing intensive but they have been run on the Xeon equivalent of an E6300 (albeit slowly). Quad core would be preferred. Lastly the case must be classy. Noise is not an issue because the current computer is a jet engine. I was thinking about the ATCS but its kinda expensive. I was thinking about doing i7 but I got confused between the i7 920 and the i7 870. Which one is better?

The 870 is better for many things.
Must sleep now, someone more knowledgeable will answer soon.

Grab the i7 920 and a 1366 socket mobo. It would be a great investment.

Since this machine is going to be used for a mostly cpu-intensive purpose, and I assume you won't be buying a video card, then you can certainly either save by buying the i5 860 or i7 920 or splurge on an i7 960, when it arrives. Since this system will not be overclocked, the i7 960 would offer better performance, I would think. You might even want to get a Xeon equivalent of the i7 920/i7 950, if you'll be running it 24/7. You would so not need any $300+ motherboard, which would allow you to buy your drives.

Ok here is a good setup. If u have a OS then here is the rest. Not sure if any of your programs use THE GPU for data acquisition but i took that in account. so u have a good CPU and a Ok gpu.
Since im sure your not going to OC i put a I7 950 in the build it will give u a little more than the I7 920. Also 6GB of ram a SSD and 2 other HDs and a new Nvidia GT220 GPU. MOBO http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=M452-6055 CPU http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...4&sku=I69-0950 GPU http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=E145-0220 RAM http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=O261-2028 PSU http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...sku=ULT-LSP650 CASE http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...0&sku=ULT40125 SSD http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=O261-6120 HDD1 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...u=TSD-1500EADS HDD2 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...sku=TSD-500AS8 DVD/CD http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...5&sku=L12-1334 CASE FANS X2 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=S457-2524 Here you go it should do what u need and MORE.

i7 8XXs are not that bad, but when you spend that much cash go for a 9XX.
I think OP should go for a Xeon, rather than a i7.

thanks for the responses guys.
I was looking at the Xeon equivalents and they are hella expensive. This computer will be on 24/7 for three-four years. So would a Xeon be a much better fit? Or is the difference only marginal?

also should I go for a server mobo? Or would a desktop mobo be just as stable. Basically stability and reliability are key
sorry for the double post
