Then carefully explain to his mommy how building a computer yourself presents you with a much better value than buying a pre-built. If informed properly, any intelligent adult should understand this.

Parents like statistics and things in writing. Give them an article off a credible site explaining what the advantages and disadvantages of having a prebuilt vs custom built. That will probably sway their opinion a little.

If all else fails, buy an HP, stick a new video card in it. And good luck

Yea good luck trying to get something somewhat decent. Although this could be possible. Really all he needs is a 4850. Maybe even less.

Damn right.

Alot of parents just have it drilled in their heads that if you want a computer, it has to be purchased from a company. They just don't understand, it's pretty sad.

When I built a machine for my girlfriend on her birthday, her mom thought I didn't know the half of what I was doing. When we booted it for the first time she hid around the corner with fear of it exploding HAHA, it booted up perfectly. Plus it saved me hundreds versus buying some stupid locked and preconfigured Dell.

Why not go to a local computer shop and get them to build it for him? In my city of 80,000 there's at least 8 places I could go to get a "custom" built PC. I mean they probably just order the parts from Newegg like the rest of us and charge you $40 an hour for the privilege.

It's not as fun as building it yourself but that way you get the "security" of buying a prebuilt machine and you can specify exactly what parts you want which is the biggest advantage of doing it yourself. Also, a computer built by a local shop will be easy to upgrade for the future and most reputable places offer warranties etc...
