My friend needs a build for source games and simulators. His budget is around $300.
Here is a list of what he has and needs: He has: -Monitor (He has one but I don't know the size) -HDD (I will give him a 500gb WD green) -Case (I will make him a MDF tech station) -Ram (I will give him 2 GB DDR2 for now) -Video Card ( I will give him my old Radeon card for now) -Disk Drive ( I will give him my exta) He Needs: -OS (No office software needed) -Mobo -CPU -PSU Though $300 is the limit for the components he doesn't have, the cheaper the better, that way he will be able to replace the crappy components I am lending him.

Have you considered going with an Atom 330 or an Ion?

Mobo - AM2+/AM3 (Something not so dissimilar to this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138156) CPU - Phenom II x2 545 or Athlon II x3 425 Only thing you're missing is PSU. Go with a Ultra LS600 or something.

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103706
MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128392 PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139004 For OS, see if you can use WINE to emulate source games in a Linux Distro. Or, a student copy of Windows 7 if he is a student, that is.

I love how most of the recommendations have been AMD even though this is posted under "Intel"

Mobo: Biostar G31E-M7 - $45 shipped http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138145 CPU: E6300 - $81 shipped http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116091 Rest can be spent on OS, and maybe PSU if needed, if no PSU you could get a nicer board. Next real step up will cost about $150 from the E6300 for Intel.
