Default Even the slightest OC gives me the BSD...

Hi all! Simple question: I have an Asus P5B with an E7500 (and the rest are good components, OCZ, Powercooler, etc). When I try to do even a ridiculous OC like upping 5 Mhz the FSB, I get the BSD loading Windows or after logon. This is more of a general question: what can cause (tipically) a BSD by only a very minor change in the FSB?

For example: a few minutes ago I only changed the FSB from 266 to 271 and... BSD once again, baby!

I've read that many people have accomplished huge OCs with that same mainboard and a E7xxx CPU.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!!!

Hi rpm!

System specs:

CPU: E7500 @2,93GHz
Mainboard: Asus P5B
Video: MSI nVidia 9500GT
Memory: OCZ 2x1 GB DDR2 6400 5-5-5-15 @400 MHz
PSU: Powercooler 500W
CPU Fan: Cooler Master Vortex 752
HDD: Samsung SATA2 500GB
Windows XP Pro / Windows 7 Pro
CPU Temps: 35°C
FSBRAM: 2:3

Is that enough to make a guess on the problem?

I do not have the one silver bullet to resolve your problem. I think you are in a trial-and-error situation. Here are some suggestions:

With your FSB at 266 and RAM at factory reccomended settings run Memtest or 3 or 4 hours. If RAM passes without error, begin Prime95 running each test at least 4 hours. I think you will see something fail one of these tests.

Another less methodical process is to just loosen RAM timings and bump the voltage up a couple of steps. If you still bluescreen, increase your CPU voltage and if you are still stuck increase your NB voltage. Don't be overly timid with your voltage increases. Just watch your temps carefully.

I had something similar to this happen once, try removing all your ram and then the motherboard battery for a few minutes, reset cmos and then restart

Thanks Albatross and tha d0ctor!

New question pops in my mind: I have the memory timings 5-5-5-15 when @400Mhz. Could it be possible that when I up the FSB a bit, the tRAS can't catch up with the boost, causing the BSD? What is better? 4-4-4-15 (the OCZ recomended timings) or 5-5-5-15 (the auto timings done by the mobo)?

Also, can those auto-timings be too strict to perform even a small OC?

Thanks!!!

Since Tha Doctor has seen the identical symptoms you discribe, give his reccomendation a shot. If that does not help I would suggest to test not guess. Run Memtest86+ and see if your RAM is stable and/or not defective.

Use the User CP to properly fill in your system specs. Thanks.

#1 When you overclock your cpu make sure the RAM stays at or just below (if you have to) stock settings/timings. Try and keep the RAM completely out of the equation while you get the cpu stable.

#2 Open CPU-Z and see what the voltage is for the cpu at stock. Write it down.

#3 Go in and disable the throttling features in your bios: Eist, Speed Step, Spread Spectrum. I'm not familiar with that board's bios but it's a good idea to disable those while you look for stability.

#4 Raise your fsb to 400 and lower the mutli if you have to in order to keep the cpu at close to stock speeds. You want to find the highest stable fsb your chip and board can handle without changing the cpu speed yet. 400 is a good place to start because it will get you to 1:1 with your RAM, it won't oc the RAM yet. * If you go slightly over the cpu's stock speed when the fsb is at 400 and she won't boot/isn't stable, bump your cpu vcore up 1 notch and try again. *When you try the 400fsb also raise your NB voltage a bit, higher fsb speed usually requires more NB voltage. Again, I'm unfamiliar with that board but try 1.22 for the 400 fsb.

Fill in your system specs properly so people can see your rig at a glance and offer more specific help.

What's the stock vcore? Some motherboard do not like to assign the voltages properly, too low or high.

When I see a failed OC on such a low OC attempt, I immediately suspect the ram divider is too high, and the ram itself is running out of spec. Munchener, run CPU-Z and see what the ram is currently running. It will be displayed in MHz under the "Memory" tab.
