Hi OCN,
a workstation computer of my parents' won't POST. I've looked through Dell's tech support section, and found this (first one in the chart, "power up default) and this (power problems) - it describes exactly what's happening, but I don't want to go directly to Dell for help. Should I just give up completely on this or something? I saw some forum posts in Dell's community that describe exactly what's going on and what I should give up on (like PSU?), but we're tight on money, and we can't just buy a $500 computer. Halp?

Also, the thing is, the hard drive in the machine wasn't backed up... we need to get it outta there...
I've tried reseating the video card, reseating the hard drive, etc. Haven't done anything drastic like removing the mobo or getting a new PSU. Also, it was working yesterday.

In a system that old, I would lean toward the PSU being the problem....
I dont know what you have available but your gonna need to start testing things.... Mainly the PSU then mobo.

When I turn it on, there's an amber light, meaning there's a possible internal power problem... but why would the light be on? /ignorance
The forum post said he bought a new PSU and it still didn't work.

Only way to know for sure is testing though. Maybe a local guy/shop will test your PSU for free?

I guess.
I don't feel like goin' to a CompUSA or Best Buy/Geek Squad though... they'll be all like WE'LL FIX UR COMPUTER FER $500 AND LET YOU HAVE A REPLACEMENT FOR $500 AND THROW IN WINDOWS 7

Clear CMOS for the hell of it, has worked for me in the past with old systems. Another goofy thing, but try holding down the start button for at least 10 seconds when you try and start it. (Wierd, but sometimes works.)

I had a Dimension 4400 a while back and it did the same amber power button. It definitely was the power supply. Swapped it out and all was well again.
