That looks like a solid build, obviously he could get more performance with the HD5850 (if they ever come in stock). You're also missing the ODD. Just stay away from LG on those.

You're missing a heatsink + fan. Also any dvd drives? I'd wait for a 5850 to come in stock Great bang for the buck.

Good solid PSU. Critical component right there.

Rest of the build looks pretty future proof too.

Seems like a nice build. The only things I would suggest are the Power Supply is a little overkill if he doesn't plan on adding more GPU's.

Also on the hard drive front, you'll get better performance from the Black edition of the same model.

Does he plan on overclocking the system? He'll need a nice CPU cooler too if so.

Looks pretty good, but I always have suggestions

- RAM: Intel likes faster memory over tighter timings; a 4GB kit of CAS-9 2000MHz would be perfect (I've seen G.Skill Ripjaws as low as $99 on the egg)

- Case: CM HAF 922 is $99 shipped (it's an excellent case / price and would save you a few bucks for a HSF)

- Card: I know your friend wants nVidia, but he should consider a 4890; would save him another ~$50 and when OC'd is on par/faster than GTX 285

- HSF: Good amt of options with a 1156 bracket for most coolers, but for some that come ready to go: Noctua NH-U12P, TRUE MUX 120, Xiggy Balder (coming in Nov.) or if you really want to splurge, a Megashadow

EDIT: If you can fit it in the budget (maybe after some better deals), I'd go for 2x drives RAID 0 + backup

I like it. Except i think the full tower case is a bit much for what you got in it. Definitely a solid mid size case would suffice. 922 as mentioned before is good.

Yep put the 922 on it, saved him some money for a HSF.

Changed RAM to the CAS 9
