Default Generic Overclocking Question

Hello, I just have a quick question to ask. I have a 790i Ultra, q9300, and ocz1800 ram. I was able to get stable at a 1900 FSB (3.56Ghz) which is about the max I've seen for a q9300 so I was happy with it. Unfortunately, I had to RMA the 790i and for another now with my new 790i I can't get stable with anything past an 1800 FSB. I can boot just fine all the way up to 2000, so I know theres no FSB holes in my way but I'm simply not stable.

My question is if 1800mhz is probably the max this motherboard will ever get since I was able to get 1900 with my previous board or if there's still a chance if I upgraded my ram and cpu that I'd be able to reach my ultimate goal of 2,000. I was looking into buying a qx9650 with 2000mhz ram (or even higher) but there's really not much sense in getting better ram if my board can't push that high.

All boards are different this one might take a bit more voltage to run stable at those speeds just keep temps in check and see what happens IMO. I think that CPU would be a great upgrade as you can adjust multi to take some stress off board. That and the faster RAM will give you better performance even if you cant get FSB as high since they run faster.

Yup, sounds to me like you board tops out at 1800.
Perhaps your other board broke because you were at 1900 and it couldn't quite handle it?
That's all I can think of at the moment.

Maybe also did you run auto volts? What kinda cooling did you have all stock or other?

I have water cooling so temperatures are not an issue. On my 1900 board cpu voltage was at 1.4, fsb 1.35, spp 1.55 which is all the higher I really want to go. I tried cpu at 1.45 and fsb at 1.4 on my current board but no luck. So, I guess this board's max FSB is 1800 which is a shame because I see a few people getting 2,000+ with them. Also, my 1900 board broke due to other reasons than overclocking.

I was really just wondering if a new cpu/ram would affect the FSB at all, but I guess it's all up to the board. I'll probably just keep my current ram then. Thanks for your help.

On off-topic, does it matter if the core and shader clocks of a GPU are linked?

Actually CPUs can determine max FSB due to the wall but in your case that's not issue. Yes you can run unlinked if you fold the super high shader clocks will help PPD.
