A friend is asking me on these two builds and which one would suit him better. He does gaming, school work, AutoDesk products, Adobe Products and the occasional movie converting for his iPod.

Get the i7 in 1156 or 1366. If he plans to Crossfire the 5870, I would go for the 1366 platform.
ALSO the 1366 platform would last him longer since the next CPUs are the i9s and they will use 1366 socket.

For gaming performance, the i5 would win hands down.
For rendering and stuff, I'm not so sure. HT on the i7 might help.

I second your decision, a MUCH better video card for gaming and the i5 is still a very powerful chip although the i7 is better. Either way it's not going to be a MASSIVE, MASSIVE difference between the two in CPU power, but in gaming; the 5870 will fly ahead.

1366 is future proof. and id ont know how true it is but read they handle tri SLi setups so if he goes that path in the future might wanna grab a 1366 i7 or i9

i5 + 5870= Gaming
__________________i7 + 5770 = rendering, encoding, light gaming. The i5 will be good for everyday computer/autodesk stuff though. 3DMAX and Autocad aren't really demanding. No such thing as "future proof". computer hardware comes and goes every few years. 1366 has been out for a year already anyway. give it a year and we'll see new sockets along with DDR 4/5

Do some games depend on CPU more than GPU?

If youyour friend can't wait and save more: i5 + 5870 The performance hit from even the best cards in CFX or SLI, is small. On-die pcie controller of 1156/P55 i5s (1156 i7?) gives a bonus reduction in latency over 1366 i7. This means a little bit of fps increase. It is perfect for gaming.
