I hate to come back to the site only when I have a problem, but you guys are the only ones I know that might be able to help me so here goes.
__________________I woke up yesterday morning and out of the blue, my PC wouldn't post. It will cut on and I can hear the fans spinning, but they are spinning fast and then slow and fast again. Also, there are 3 red lights on my 4870, I did some research and found that 2 are on because the PCIe power cords aren't plugged in (which they are) and the other light is for temp fault. Further searching found a post on this board with the same 3 lights problem, the problem there was the CPU power cord wasn't plugged in. I tried an old PCI video card I use for a backup and it wouldn't post either so I don't think the problem is with my 4870. To me it seems my power supply isn't powering the system enough because of the revving fans and LEDs blinking and fading (fan LEDs), or it could be the motherboard since you can replicate this problem by not plugging in the 4 pin CPU power. If you guys have any suggestions I'd really appreciate it.

You know already the indications point to your PSU. If you can round up another power supply try swapping it. Or, I suppose your motherboard may have bitten the dust. Good Luck.
Also, staying with a power issue, make sure your input A/C and spike arrester or UPS are alright.

It's the power supply. Just had the same thing happen with my OCZ EliteXstream 1000W.
Edit: If you have a LED behind the PSU check if it turns red. You can buy a PSU tester for like 12 bucks and test your PSU. Mine turned out the 12V- failed so I swapped it with my old Antec Truepower and my pc is fine now.

Thanks for the help, just ordered a new PSU, its an Antec and I read a lot of good reviews on it so I hope it will do the trick and last a while...although I was kind of hoping it would be something else so I could have an excuse to build a new PC

I got it March 08 I think so its a good year an half old and most likely out of warranty...but this Antec has a 3 year manufacture warranty so I should be good on PSUs for the next 3 years.

. Just post a trouble ticket and they should send you RMA information. If you don't want to use it just sell the replacement PSU. That's what I'm doing .

Hate to tell you but that does not sound like a psu issue to me
![]() check out the guide in my sig. Firstly you should of removed the cmos battery then tried the ram individually because im pretty sure the ram is at fault. ( thats the only time it attempts to start up like your describing..... )

Shadow, you are my hero, although I will wait until I get my new PSU and know that it is a PSU issue. Going to try out el gappo's suggestions now.
__________________EDIT: Removed battery, moved RAM around and tried them one at a time and still getting same problem. Also checked out your guide, seems like for every device I unplug, the fans spin faster and without the slowing down and speeding up like before, leading me to believe even further that this is a PSU problem. Here's hoping that's all it is.
