Arrow To i7 or not to i7.......

So, my current rig is in my signature. It runs really nice with the new SSD.

But I want to make use of the extra stick of RAM I have lying around, and so want to upgrade to i7. I have been collecting coins, and will have several hundred dollars with which to help me do so.

However, that got me thinking: will i7 and Tri-channel really do all that much?

I've become a bit of a speed junky, so here are my options:

-Core i7 920 and X58 Board
OR
-Buy another SSD or two to do a RAID 0 (they'd be smaller to cut costs but the same/greater speed than the current).

Which would make a more defined difference? Mind you, this is a 790i mobo that has been giving me weird overclocking results, so it may help to switch to X58.

You should just use all three sticks of ram in your system right now! It will be a waste if you aren't using the third stick just because of dual channel.

Wouldn't that hit my bandwidth by using single-channel?

You already have an SSD. It's plenty fast. Go for i7 1366. The i7 1366 will be future proof too as the new i9 (Q1 2010) will be using the same 1366.

i7 would make more of a difference than SSD. SSD just give you faster boot times and maybe shave a few seconds off loading times. i7 would improve the FPS of your games. It would be nice if you could OC your current CPU some more. But if you could OC your 9550 some more, i7 would not exactly be worth it from a gaming perspective.

Good call there. My current system is a little finicky. Sometimes goes into safe mode, and will boot fine with same settings upon restart. Runs fine in windows, mobo is just quirky.

Oh, and I'm mostly an Nvidia guy. My past ATI cards have always died on me. Just waiting to see what Nvidia does to counter the 5000 series. Not looking for a GPU upgrade anyway (maybe once the Lucid Hydra 200 becomes and add-on card ....).

From what I've heard the difference of single, dual, and triple channel are not that big. Also I am pretty sure that two of your sticks would be dual channel and one would be single. You can check in cpu-z.

I would rather take the performance upgrade of more ram than worrying about all of my sticks running in dual channel. Test in super-pi to see the speed difference of the ram.

As for the upgrade, I would rather have an x58 i7 setup than an ssd or raid0, but I haven't tried raid0 or an ssd, so I wouldn't know. But an i7 would be a better upgrade in my opinion.
