Default Quad or Dual with a UD3P?

I was planning on getting a E8400 and a UD3P. But I have been reading around on the forums and people say that it is better to get a quad instead of a dual.

So would I be better off in getting the Q9400 or the E8400.
I do plan to OC since the UD3P is such a great board for that.

I don't want to go over budget too much. My dad is thinking around 225-250ish for CPU and Mobo.

Newegg has the UD3P for $115 after rebate, so that leaves me with $135 left. But I can put up some of my own money to get a better CPU.

-Thanks

I'd def go with the q9400. Its the CPU I have and I was torn between those 2 CPUs as well. I overclock mine to 3.2 when i need to and it does it without a problem. You will get a higher clock speed with the E8400 but its still only a dual-core, so I'd go with the Quad

Or would it be more cost effective if I went with AMD. I know this is an intel thread, but I just want to know what would give me the best price : performance ratio.

AMD is fun...
It is good for gaming for the price, but not so good for other stuff...
It is a greater challenge to OC... (I like the challenge)

Or you could go with this board instead ^ Its the same as the one you had selected but with only one pci-e slot. Since you are going to run with one card this is a better choice for you and its a little bit cheaper.

What do you do with your computer? If you like to multitask than the quad is great, otherwise save a few bucks and get a good dual core and overclock the daylights out of it - and take the money difference between the quad/dual and get a good aftermarket cooler to overclock it further

Gaming mainly, I am getting a Laptop for college purposes.

But I do like to multi-task, might have music open, couple of browser windows open, playing some GPU intensive games, torrent. But I do not convert videos or anything like that.

My first thought was to suggest the 8400, given what you said you where doing with your rig. I have an 8400 and it OCs nicely, is cool and stable.

Having said that, the Q9400 can get up to a decent OC speed, so Im thinking that maybe the way to go.

Just be aware you will need to consider a good CPU cooler for this quad as she may get a tad hot on OCing.
