http://www.motherboardrepair.com/ Lists some of the known manufacturers "The Nichicon capacitor manufacturing glitch affected a batch of Nichicon HN(M) and HM(M) series capacitors. Reports of fails of these series of capacitors were noted on Dell GX270, Dell 400SC serverboards, Intel Brand motherboards 845/865/875 series (various models but not all) and Apple iMac G5. (only limited to motherboards manufactured between certain dates which had capacitors from this batch installed on them)" A quote from an Iowa State University release http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,13709831

Yeah, those batteries are expensive. You could get like 10 bucks from the battery alone.

WOW the same exact fire in the same place happened to me not long ago. my board looked exactly like yours in every way I thought I cause it because i plugged a 7-1 Multimedia card reader in that spot that was form my HP. Of course i told them that nothing was in that input only cause everything can void a warranty now a days.
If you have any questions about the RMA process I will check back later. Other than that here is the last email i got back from them after i read that they don't cover boards that catch on fire. If for some reason they don't cover you I will forward you the original copy with all my RMA # and case #. Best of luck hope you have a laptop. By the way every other part of my PC was fine I sent back my graphics card just because I could and ATI sent me a new one. I don't even think they even check if the one you send in is bad. Geoff RMA Email DETAILS --------------- User: Received Date: 4/10/2006 7:01:14 PM Email Subject: Re: Email Tracking # E9906 has been replied Email description: my main reason for returning the board is that it caused a fire at a connector on the motherboard. The USB port was not even being used at time. I just want to be assured that I''m not wasting my time and money shipping the product back to only get rejected or even worse get charge again to bring my PC back to life (i bought the motherboard to replace a OEM board from HP made by you guys). (Physical damage is NOT covered under your ASUS warranty under NO circumstances and automatically VOIDS your warranty on your product. This damage can include any shape or form of corner / edge damage, broken traces, broken CPU socket, and / or burns. If you do send a product in that is physical damage, you will be notified and the product will be repaired / replaced for a fee or rejected.)
