I believe you need a 64 bit OS to recognize all the RAM

Correct. Windows XP can only support 4GB of total RAM (including video card). So if you have 4GB and 512 of video memory, it will only recognize 3.5GB. It is how all 32 bit OSes are developed. If you want to use 8GB (some motherboards support 16GB) you will need a 64 bit OS.

Yes, you require a 64Bit operating system to fully address all 4GB of system memory.

You need a 64-bit OS for the cpu to be able to address more than 3.5gb of any memory. This includes memory on video cards and even sound cards. Little known fact is that's why Nvidia did 640 and 768 on their cards this generation. 2gb ram + 2x 768/640 vram = memory usable on 32-bit operating systems

Pros: I loaded up Bioshock and maxed out the settings, but this graphics slit the game's throat then ate it's entrails for dessert. It slammed Assassin's Creed's head onto the curb then stomped its head into that curb until it was nothing but a bloody pulp. This card is one bad mo-fo. It'll backhand your sister and degrade your mom, but they will still love it and want to date it because it is just that good. I love this card so much that I burned my tongue trying to french kiss it, and I still keep trying.

I thought the specific amount of memory on the G80 cards was to utilize the 384 bit memory bus.
Source: techPowerUp

The memory size is directly related to the bus width. Since the memory chips used are 16Mx32 chips with 32 signal lines going into each chip, you will need 384 / 32 = 12 memory chips to connect your whole 384-bit bus. 12 memory chips @ 64MB each are 768 MB (the 64 MB memory size is calculated: 16 MBit x 32 / 8 bits per byte = 64 MB). On the GeForce 8800 GTS you have only 10 memory chips, because the bus is not as wide. Basically NVIDIA turns off two of the eight blocks

If you have 32-bit OS and you have a Dual core Processor than windows splits it up to for each core. Remember a high ram video card is also added so if you have 256MB video card than You will end up having 3.75GB's etc etc.

You can always try editing /PAE in boot.ini but it's not always supported by your hardware and it never worked for me. However I got 3Gb's of ram so ...

2GB for each core? where'd you get that? i don't care how many cores you got, if you have a 32-bit OS, 3.5GB is your MAX

oh I was googling 4Gb's of ram on 32-bit OS

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=555223

Quote:
XP pro will recognise up to 4GB of ram with up to 2GB available to any one single process, the 64-bit versions aren't mentioned there, but the (addressable) space will be (2^64 - 1) (which is a very very very big number)
