Talking Kingston HyperX 4x1Gb PC8500 FTW

I've finally found a 4 Gb kit that I am happy with. I tested 7 2x2Gb kits from Corsair, Patriot, and OCZ, none of them noteworthy. So now to put to rest the 2x2 vs 4x1 debate, I want to stress this....4x1 puts no more strain on my MCH than 2x2 or 2x1. Nothing in my settings needed to be changed for stability, other than RAM timings and Vdimm

Yesterday I recieved my Kingston HyperX PC8500 1066MHz 5-5-5-15 @2.2V kit. They run stock speeds and 800MHz 4-4-4-12 at 2.0V (CAS3 is a no post). Due to the straps available on my X38, at my 400MHz FSB the DDR speeds available are: 800, 961, 1003, 1066, 1200, 1333, 1600. 961 would not post CAS4, although I think a higher tRFC(30, stock is 42) and vDimm may change that. 1200 was a no post at stock 5-5-5-15 @2.20V. Later in the week I will reconfigure my OC to 450x8 and see what RAM speeds I can get.

The Kingston spec list and one of their reps stated that the ICs were very likely to be Micron D9GKX, with a slight possibility that they would be D9GMH. WRONG- They are Elpida 5108AJBG 8E-E
One thing to note, at 2.0V these modules run pretty cool, even for being packed in a 4x1 configuration. 2.1V is slightly warm to the touch, still cooler than my most finless heat spreaders on DDR2 at those voltages. 2.2V has not been tried yet, other than a single no post shot at 1200MHz.

Here is a bench of 1066MHz 5-5-5-15 2T primary timings, tweaked subtimings for a 15% gain.

I'm glad your happy but what is it that you find so special about these sticks because all the 8500 memory ive had would do 1200 MHz on stock timings and if these can't that's kinda lame

Not too bad. They were even better when I got them at CompUSA at 90% off for $10 a kit and sold them for $80 a piece I've seen lots of OC logs though stating that they are pretty good. By any chance, did you try any GEiL kits while you were OC'ing.

I have not found a single PC8500 kit, 2x1, 2x2, or 4x1 that will do DDR 1200 at 2.20V or less. Sure, maybe at 2.30-2.35V some kits will, I'm not willing to push that kind of voltage. That being said, I have not tried anything between 1066 and 1200, you never know I may be able to do 1199 and not 1200.

I got a pretty good deal from the Egg actually- MSRP is 170, the Egg 199, I paid $80. I was going to order the GEIL 2X2 kit, but the price drop ended and they went back to near 200. Same for the G.Skill (150), and I wanted to steer clear of Crucial for a while.

They ran cool enough with the stock spreaders @ 2.1V that I'm sure that 2.2 would have been OK. I replaced the stock heat spreaders with ones that have a heatpipe and fins- they work well enough that I thought they were not- Just barely above ambient while on, and they cool very quick once you shut it off.

According to Kingston's spec list, the only thing different between my PC8500 and your PC9600 is the operating voltage- 2.20 vs 2.35.

I've had 4 sets of 2x1 Micron D9, 3 were GMH, one GCT. Not a single one would run 1200 with 2.20V or less, although all would run CAS3 at 800MHz and CAS4 at 1000MHz

Yea, exactly 2.3V. I have only really tested 2.0V and 2.1V

FYI

Here you have some interresting reading about 4Gb and TRFC when OC on ASUS P35, X38 and X48 board, yes itīs about OCZ RAM on ASUS board but it seams that itīs a ASUS board issue and not a RAM issue.
