Default Vista64 4 or 8 gb?

Since DDR2 is pretty cheap, by the time D3 comes out ill prolly be able to buy 8gb instead of 2 or 4.

is there benefits when using 8gb versus 4gb ? Also, Ive heard the NB runs hotter, so I need a fan on top of it, and do 8gb limits overclock ?

Thanks !

I highly doubt you will notice a performance difference, especially in D3, between 4 and 8GB of RAM.

Well 8 gigs is really nice, I don't know if anything would really utilize that much ram. I'd say go with 4 gigs. If you have lots of extra money, go to DDR3.

Edit: Also if you go 8 gigs, see if you can get 4x2 gig modules because 4 dimm slots being used would make overclocking harder.

Im not just talking about games, but also about overall windows performance.

Croft: 4x2 ? yeah the 4 dimms will be taken then. I never seen 4gb DIMM!

I mean, if there's NO difference between 4 and 8, then ill go for 4.

in the meantime maybe DDR3 will get cheaper too, so..

but, I know that frequency is better than timing, so in theory, DDR3 2133 even at 8-8-8-16 should beat DDR2-1066 @ 4-4-4-12. I know that the bandwidth double or triple, but I wonder about real world performance and game FPS.

I have myself wondered this too, I'm only on 2Gbs of ram here and would love more. But I wonder:
*Is this amount holding back my GPU in anyway? Would more give me a noticeable difference?
*is the jump up from 4gbs to 8gbs overkill (as in would it even get utilized?)

For years I thought Ram was everything and would always up performance, but obviously there appear to be limits.

If you get 8gb of ram you can turn off your swap file, which people have been telling me speeds up performance alot. Although, if you do run out of ram with no page file, your programs will instantly crash too...

Heres a article on Tomshardware about it: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...shop,1775.html

and the section about the swap file: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...op,1775-6.html

Nice linkage, read the whole thing. It really all sounds good, though they never showed any sort of benchmark or said much about graphics performance.
Also the driver problem with turning paging off sounds concerning, but probably isn't that bad.

Gee I only need now to spend my life savings on retail Vista-64bit

Get an OEM disk so you don't have to pay the full retail price.
