link doesnt work i would wait for nehalem to get DDR3 that way you can get a cpu as well as ram and not have to change mobo's again

I can't see any possible benefit of DDR3 for now, except that if you actually manage to OC it over DDR3-1600 you may gain 2-3% over DDR2-1066... Not much of a benefit considering the prices.

A year from now your X48 will be old and slow, compaired to Nehalem, and wether you went DDR2 or DDR3 will be largely irrelivant.

Yeah, once Nehalem comes out, you'll have to buy a new board anyway, since it's a completely new socket and all. But there's really no reason to use DDR3 unless you pair it with Nehalem, so it all works out.

Will ddr3 be the new standard? Yes, how soon? not all that soon. The newest chipset boards still support ddr2 to some extent. The Nahalem which is expected to release this winter will be the newest platform and will change the standard as it exclusively supports ddr3, but the cost of the new hardware for a new system will be around 1200 us dollars for the board the processor and the ram so I dont forsee ddr2 being completely phased out for at least another year year and half minimum. DDR2 is cheap, go with it, not to mention all ddr3 ram is currently higher latency then ddr2, ddr2 is cheaper and faster at this point stick with it for a year and save up money towards the new format

Yeah, you guys all talk like the Nehalem is the thing we're all going to run out and buy as soon as it comes out because it's going to change so much technology. Think about this: The QX series are STILL going for over $1k on the Egg, and they've been out for many months. What do you expect the Nehalem to cost, something that's actually affordable? You're looking around $1500 just to get a system that can run the chip between the CPU itself, a new motherboard that currently doesn't exist yet, and DDR3. DDR3 will most like become the standard when the Nehalem is affordable to most people's budgets, not as soon as it comes out.

hi all.....
is DDR3 backwards compatible with a DDR2 board.... if i stick in 4gb of DDR3 in my board will it work.....& if so surly it will take any OC i give it cos even at the highest it will probably still be slower than stock...? or is that a total no go ....i cant see any real difference other that very loose timings to handle the high frequency. ![]()
