Default Overclocking Memory. Clarification Required!

I have spent about 2 hours reading about overclocking memory and I feel completely lost. I should break my quandry down into a few questions.

1. My FSB and Mem are unlinked. Is overclocking the ram as simple as turning up the Mhz and compensating with voltage for stability? If so, what is a reasonable overclock for 800mhz ram?

2. The stock timings on my OCZ Reaper DDR2 800 ram is 4-4-4-15. Should a goal be to lower these timings? For example, would 4-4-4-12 yield an increase in performance?

3. Is there some tool for specifically testing my memory that will tell me if my OC was a step in the right direction? I have looked to no avail.

4. Should I focus on adjusting timings, Mhz or just not even bother overclocking the memory at all?

I know it is a lot to digest but I think this might clear up a lot of misconceptions because, quite frankly, I have seen a lot of contradictions over the past couple of hours of reading. Thanks in advance!

You've got Intel so your focus should be on the speed of the memory and not the timings so much. I would shoot for at least 900+ Mhz on this memory. What you want to do first is find yourself a comfy Mhz and then work on timings.

Yeah, timings don't really do all that much for performance, it's more just about the speed of the RAM. If you can get your sticks to run at more than 900MHz, you're in business. You're going to want to loosen the timings first to 5-5-5-15 before you start, or the process will be more difficult. When you've bumped the speed, then lower the timings back down. Good luck!

1. I can run my patriot 800mhz ram @ 1080 mhz. So if you got nice quality ram you can match that or go higher.

2. already answered

3. Use memtest to check if its stable.

Well, gotta love these threads that answers exactly your question, however, I have still one, and pardon the stupidity of it, but is there a place/program where I can check my ram temperature? Should I be worried about that? Just needs some clarification. I'm still running mines at stock(1066).

I googled for a bit, and couldn't find one. If you care that much about your RAM temperature, your case's ambient temp is a good thing to gauge off of. Seriously though, I also have a 1066MHz kit, and nothing seems to be amiss, even after a 1GHz OC on my E6400. I wouldn't worry about it unless you plan on OC'ing it or overvolting for whatever reason.

I remember one more thing I was curious about. If I am overclocking in the manner that was mentioned in this thread, should I use 1t or 2t for the timing?

If you want to know ram temperature you will have to buy an IR Thermometer, also good for many other things as well inside a computer.

You will want to use 2T.
