it is an area on a hard drive reserved by the OS to use like ram when you run out of ram.

unfortunately it is slower than ram (since it is on the hd)

So why do people mention the words disable/enable/instability with pagefile?

You can disable it to free hard drive space. Some times a to big/to small page file can cause instability. If you have a lot of RAM, some people would disable it. Sometimes this can cause instability as certain programs may require it. You can change the size of it is you do not need it, or if you need more of it.

Here is some more info.

And even more.

Because you can set how much of your hard drive to use for pagefile/virtual memory. Right click computer in start menu, then advanced system settings, advanced tabe in the window that pops up, last in that tab, can change how much space to be alocated for virtual memory.

I usually leave mine to system managed size (just around 2GB right now). Looks like you have 1TB of HDD space, so a few gigs should not matter to much. I prefer to leave it alone, that way I know it will (probably) not cause any problems.

That's why its good to dedicate a single drive completely to an OS or OS's. I don't know how much this helps now a days but it works for my sig rig. When my c: drive was full and I had no page space I was slower than a dos machine. (no joke)

Mine was set at 6100MB, but then again I also have 6GB of RAM. Anything above 2GB will be fine.
