Question What Ram for Laptop Upgrade?

I'm looking at upgrading both my brother's and my laptop. One is hp and the other is compaq and they both have 1x2 gb ram that they came with originally (I think they are hp brand). I heard that laptops can't utilize close to 4gb of ram, and 3gb would be more reasonable. I was wondering if I could buy this and replace 1 1gb ram stick of each laptop with one of the 2gb ram sticks so they would both be 3gb ram lappies. Would they be compatible with this? Thanks and + rep for help.

First of all, you need to make sure that the chipset in those laptop support 4gb of ram.

Not all chipsets support 4gb, some max out at 2gb.

Could you give a product ID for each laptop?

THe best thing to do is go by the manufacturers recommendations for laptop memory. Its more than likely DDR2 533mhz and would be advisable to go with the same because anything faster would only downclock to 533 anyway.

If they are running Vista then its better to have 3GB, unless they Vista 64 and they can use 4GB (if the laptops support it). And you should really buy matching memory, so it would be better to buy 3GB to replace the old memory.

Yea I assume you know you have DDR2? Sure 200pin SO-DIMM is what you want looks fine to me?

I assume you both have 32bit OS, that is where the 3GB comes into play.

I would ask are both Intel? If so then dual channel should still work. If AMD while still OK you might lose as much as 30% bandwidth.

Edit: Tell me the CPU and chipset also.

Sorry for not posting the laptop info. Mine is a compaq CQ60-210US. Max ram supported is 4gb and the bus speed is 667, but I'm not sure if it's worth it to buy 3gb rather than 4gb if they can't be split between computers (same price for both). I'll post my bro's laptop info soon, but it is an amd as well and is about 1 year old now. Thanks.

You want to match RAM sticks in size chipset does not support asymmetrical dual channel and the hit can be 30%. Get 4GB's for yourself. Get PC-5300 @667Mhz.

Edit: With that IGP you want the maximum RAM bandwidth. Also because IGP/GPU does not have it's own RAM you will see more than 3GB's system RAM.

Ironic a link links to what I commented on? I must say a good link and that powerpack sounds very smart.
