Unhappy Upgraded RAM--no increase in speed?

So, I've made several changes to my setup since I was last here. I now have some good memory, as well as a decent amount of it, plus I've flush-n-filled my system with 64-bit Vista Ultimate, to take advantage of that 8GB of RAM.

Back when I was still on 32-bit Vista Home Premium with 2GB of cheap RAM, everything in the Windows Experience Index was doing pretty well except for memory. It was lagging behind at a paltry 5.1. Well, now that I've swapped things out, everything has maxed out at 5.9...except memory. It's still at 5.1.

Now I'm aware that the Windows Experience Index really doesn't mean much and it's pretty much just another Microsoft flop that never really took off, but it's still quite disheartening to see that it's still lagging behind while everything else is maxed out. I even made sure to buy 5-5-5-15 memory (even though I don't really know what it truly means--only that it's supposed to be fast).

Checking out my BIOS settings reveal nothing. I do get options for altering bus speeds and memory speeds, but I see no setting for altering the memory timings to force them to be 5-5-5-15, presuming, of course, that will help make my system take advantage of the RAM's full speed capabilities.

Bear in mind that, for the moment, I don't really want to overclock anything, unless I know that it will all work well. I've already tried overclocking my Q6600--I got it from the stock 2.4GHz to 2.7GHz for a while, but couldn't go any further, despite its G0 stepping, and it eventually couldn't take anymore so I had to take it back to stock speed again.

Perhaps the OCZ memory I got isn't as fast as I was led to believe... Or maybe this mobo doesn't overclock the way others do... Or maybe... I don't know. Does anyone have any possible answers who might be familiar with this system setup?

can you post a CPU-Z shot of the memory sections?

what RAM is it exactly?

The memory in my system, as quoted from Newegg's site, is:

And here's the memory section of the CPU-Z dump:

So many things...where to begin..

First off welcome to OCN! We are always glad to see new members.

..now to your concerns: First off..you are attempting to gauge memory performance with the "WEI" ..which is can be misleading.

As far as your mem timings go..they will most likely be in the chipset section of your nvidia BIOS. You can at least verify if they are at 5-5-5-15 or not [if timings are still on Auto.. then most likely not]. Adjusting timings is a way of increasing efficiency at a given speed..so no overclocking will be done. Changing your tRas from 15 to 14 will squeeze a little more bandwidth out of your RAM..and you may find you can run tighter timings than that too [like 5-5-4-12]..you will need a good program to test memory...like MemTest86 or the windows version 'MemTest'.. <- they will ensure any changes you have made to your timings are stable for use.

*Tweaking RAM timings typically involves a little more voltage too..so be prepared to increase by a bit.. ie- from 2.1->2.15 ...etc.

1) 8GB of RAM is overkill...4GB would have been plenty and would have been easier on your memory controller (better for overclocking).

2) You got DDR2-800 5-5-5-15, which is actually kind of slow. For DDR2-800 you really want 4-4-4-12, and for DDR2-1000/1066 you want 5-5-5-15.

3) Research your board a bit better and make sure your BIOS is up-to-date. It's always best to set everything up manually rather than leaving it on auto, which could amount to who-knows-what value.

4) Your CPU & GPU overclocks matter much more than how far you can push your RAM. You won't go from "so-so" performance to "OMG!" performance just by changing RAM speed, unless you like to run a lot of benchmarks.

A single GTX260 can max out just about every game at any resolution, so therefore a second GTX260 would be overkill, right? RAM is cheap, why not go balls out?

6-6-6-18 at 800 MHz in the table? wow...that's some bad timings, you had to up the voltage to get 5-5-5-15...don't expect much from this

8GB is nowhere near overkill when you have absolutely no idea what he's using his PC for.

Those are default JDEC tables..dont try to scare him.. those listings are for default compatibility on BOOT...they very well could have an EPP for 5-5-5-15 timings still.
