Default Overclocking Help

im new to overclocking and have been trying for a little while this morning but cant seem to get much of anything.
im using the system in my sig.

the problem is that i can only boot at a MAX of 216 fsb (which is only 2.7Ghz)
i want to go higher but i think my memory is holding me back.

when i look at cpu-z my ram (which is rated at 400mhz) is running at 431mhz.

from what i have heard it is not good to push ram past its settings but i have no idea how to "unlock" the ram speed from the fsb (or if its even possible)

if i even push the fsb to 217 i get a bluescreen.

so anyways, if my ram is the problem, then how can i fix it?
or am i just S.O.L.?

i had this same problem when OCing my rig, i thought it was also the memory. however i was recently informed that its because of the chipset on my motherboard. was informed that the on board chips couldnt handle going any higher than 264 mhz if i put it at 265 same problem.....

You can always underclock your RAM to determine if it is holding you back.

I believe you can set (depending on MB) a ratio of RAM / FSB but it is generally best to run 1:1 if you can.

If you are limited to 1:1 and your RAM crashes at 217, you can buy better OC RAM.

well, i know the chipset is not so good for overlclocking (g31) but i mean, im pretty sure it can go over a measly 16mhz.

i think i will try setting the ram to 667mhz, but from what i saw in the bios, that is about the only setting i can change.
i didnt see anywhere about the fsb/dram ratio but i will look some more.

You will likely be ultimately limited by your RAM and your motherboard

well, i changed the ram speed to 667mhz and it made a world of difference.
i have it running at 3ghz no problem now.
and although the ram is recognized as 667 it runs at 800 speeds and has tighter timings lol.

i dont think i can push it much more though.
if anything i could maybe get 100mhz more out of it before the ram becomes the limiting factor again.

anyways, thats very cool and thanks for helping me guys

yea, i plan on testing that out a little later on.
i ran prime95 for about 15 min to just catch a glimpse of what temps are compared to stock....no difference lol
right now i am just playing gta4 and enjoying my extra 10fps!

overclocking is great

dude i would greatly reccomend that you make sure its stable first, and running prime for 15 mins wont generate as much heat as playing gta4 i would also reccomend that you leave HWmonitor running the backround of various games and apps just to double check temps

+1 - run Prime blend for 4 hours or so.

With my cooler, my temps max out after about 10 min, but 4 hours will give you a better idea. The fact that the temps have not risen at all could indicate you have a faulty sensor.

I'd be careful about the temps and make sure you know how (relatively) high they get
