Kinda noobie question but, does it matter what the mhz is? Right now I have 2x 1GB Sticks of PC2-4300 266mhz. Will your Crucial Ballistix Tracer still work with my mobo? I am planning to get the UD3P, but I want to know if this memory would work with my current mobo.

Current mobo is an Intel DG965OT.

Here's the correct answer:

Memory manufacturers overproduced for the last few years. It began with the expectation of Vista and overproduction. Then the weakened economy decreased demand. These drove prices down. Companies were selling RAM at or even below cost. Quite a few companies are out or are merging now. Plus they've finally lowered production and are moving to DDR3. So the OP's question should have been "Why were DDR-2 prices so low? "

If your diligent on ebay you can find some good prices. Recently I picked up 4Gb of OCZ Platinum 1066 for $45 shipped.

The DDR business has had a few very rough years. There were too much ddr chips produced. I remember that Taiwan helped funding one of those manyfacturers so it wouldn't crumble. They are very scared of overproduction again. The days of 50 dollars for a high end ram kit are over.

DDR2's going the way of DDR1

It's being phased out in favour for the newer DDR3.
