It was only just recently when I could find some good OC sticks of 2x2GB for $50 on these forums, now it seems that RAM prices have been skyrocketing everywhere.
I don't think DDR-2 has fully been replaced my DDR-3 yet, since there are still many AM2/S775 boards out there that use DDR-2, and I think the technology is at that sweet spot (not too old, not too young) of its life where prices should be at a low spot. Can anyone fill me in?

The more standard DDR3 becomes, the more DDR2 will cost

You are 1 day too late. I came up on some 1Gb sticks of DDR2 800 from a friends PC that he is upgrading, I gave them away locally.

There is a DRAM shortage across the board.
Some people blame it on Apple, who is ramping up iPod production for the Christmas season, but it's all really just supply/demand. Like usual, PC users are getting shafted.

the best bet would be to get an AMD AM3 processor or go i5/i7. the cost factor is the same as last year when the best thing was the 45nm quads

Agreed supply and demand and now that christmas is getting closer. All the companies are grabbing up everything to hold them for the coming holiday.
