If anything, buy 2x2 4gb sticks. DDR2 has gotten mad expensive lately, nearly doubled in price from 3 months ago.

I work in photoshop with images in excess of 8000 x 8000 resolution. Trust me, it helps.

some games with very high settings.....hd texture packs.....my modded Fallout 3 starts off with about 3GB......after an hour it's up to 4.5GB.....Crysis on Very High with lots of AA will go over 4GB.......FakeFactory's HL2 will get to 4GB too......plus with pagefile and superfetch disabled 1 to 1.3GB is hogged by the system
