Question Mushkin Redline 6GB (3x2GB) 240-Pin PC3 12800 - Model# 998691

Hi.
Does anyone here own this kit? Is it any good?
It's one of the few 1600mhz memory kits that have CAS 6 that I could find. I doubt that this one is made with Elpida Hyper IC's though.

is $210 a good price for these sticks?

$210 seems a bit pricey for 1600MHz. Then again, you're getting CAS 6 timings. As far as their Redline series though, top of the line stuff. And overclock well. Mine do, anyway.

You're better off with a kit that has a higher frequency rather than low timings. An i7 system will benefit more from a CAS9 at 2000mhz rather than CAS6 at 1600mhz.

Any of these will be better

I have to disagree. Most I7system, esp in gaming, benefit more from tight timing and lower frequency. however it is more cost effective if high frequency ram with high timing is bought and then custom set to lower frequency and tighter timing.

Most Mushkin DDR3 3x2's are made with Elpedia IC anyways - not great OC'ers.

you mean Elpida? Didn't they pull their Elpida Hyper IC's from the market due to a high failure rate?

I disagree with the reasoning but agree with the kits. Most 2000mhz cas9 kits will do 1600mhz cas6 and tend to be cheaper. I've gotten up to 1690mhz 6-7-6-18-1T on my Tridents. (Did not try to go higher yet with new CPU overclock still stabilizing).

I don't think the redlines have been made with Hyper ICs ever. I remember reading somewhere on XS or the mushkin forums that these were just higher binned BBSEs that are capable of being timed at 6-7-6-18.

Other than synthetic benchmarks, there really won't be that much "real world gain" with regards to going past 1600 Mhz. You may see a few more FPS in games but in a game already pushing 150+ FPS, that's marginal to negligible.

You're incorrect. I don't feel like digging up benchies, but I know for a fact that it's the other way around. Core i7's benefit from a higher frequency rather than lower timings and low frequency. You may have AM3 mixed up with 1366.

The difference between 1600mhz cas7 vs. 2000mhz cas9 is negible at this state as we are not currently using all of the memory bandwidth anyway. Some very ram intensive proccesses will show a difference but not necessarily in gaming. Additionally, at a high CPU overclock, it is nearly impossible to have the ram run at 2000mhz even if that is stock for the kit.

Here's a good comparison of various DDR3 speeds & timings.
