Just a quick 2 cents worth to add to the original post. I have a Gigabyte 965 DS3, rev2.0 w/E6600 and 2x2GB RAM @ 800Mhz. Everything is super stable, etc. No problems. I can OC without much effort, typically by only adding +.2v on memory (recommended by OCZ for the sticks I have) and then leaving all other voltages at 'normal/auto'. No problems. No complaints. Haven't fiddled enough to see where the ceilings are at, but with stock voltages (other than +.2 on memory), I run routinely @ 2700 CPU (9x300fsb) and 900Mhz / 5-5-5-15 (3x multiplier) Memory. Runs MEMTEST without fail and Core Temps top out around 48/49 under longterm loads (when load drops, temps drop back to 38/39 - I still use EIST).
At any rate, all is well.. or WAS well.. until I added a second LCD monitor to my video card (BFG OC 7600GT w/dual DVI). Took me a bit to make the connection, since I was running stock speeds when I added it and left at stock speeds for a few days before going back to an OC'd configuration. After some repeated failed attempts (every time I configured for OC, the system would reset,.. then reset a second time, bringing config back to locked CPU config (no clock control) and stock speeds and multipliers on everything. After finding this thread (the original post), I picked up on the clue of Video being a possible cause for inability to set and OC configuration that would stick. Sure enough... if I power OFF my 2nd monitor during P.O.S.T., the overclocked settings 'stick' and everything boots up normally. If I boot/reboot with the 2nd monitor ON, the reset action takes place and I'm back to default/stock settings. A little frustrating, since I share the computer with others in my household and they don't know, can't recall consistently enough, to keep the 2nd Monitor OFF during boot-up... especially during a reboot. They forget every time. So,.. I'm back to running stock speeds most of the time, again. If I fire up with the intent of 3D Gaming, etc., I set the OC up, keep my 2nd monitor OFF, and boot up @ 2700/900 for a nice performance overall performance gain. If I'm just editing photos, surfing, etc., I set to stock config (except for Memory, which I must manually control to set to 800, since the SPD will instruct 667 on these particular OCZ modules). Kind of a pain, really. Just thought I'd pass along the Dual-monitor issue. It's clearly a problem, as I've now 'proven' the issue repeatedly. Perhaps it's a by product of my particular Video Card (the BFG OC 7600GT/dual-DVI), I don't know. I'd be interested to know if I'm the ONLY one seeing a dual monitor = no overclocking on POST issue? icmp |
