Default Explanation needed: straps

Could someone explain, in a way I can understand, what the strap is and what effect it has on performance? I've read a couple of guides and I seem to fall off around "NB fsb". Could be that it's extremely early for me, or that the damn puppy is preventing me from napping in the afternoons, giving me a total of 4-5 hours of sleep a day...

Cheers!

P.S Handing out reps for good answers

Think about it like it's a CPU (basically it is) since it has a clock speed and multiplier. Lets talk about the P5W DH (975X) since that's what you've got. I assume your board sets the 800 strap as "stock" due to your CPU not being a Conroe? This means the NB has a frequency of 100MHz (200MHz applied to the CPU) with a multiplier of 4 giving a speed of 400MHz on the NB. Setting the strap to, say, 533MHz will change the frequency of the CPU to 133MHz and the NB to 67MHz. The NB will then react by changing the multiplier to 6 to get the 400MHz back. Now if you OC the multiplier will stay at 6 so your NB will gain speed (and heat) faster. The lower the strap, the higher the NB multiplier. All my info I got from here: http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22297 It's a great read. Hopefully that cleared it up a little.

Actually I've got an E6600 - just forgot to update my profile Same board, though.

What I'm interested in is how do I know what speed the chipset's trying to get (how does it determine the multiplier?) and how to know what NB clock speeds the different straps give. Also, wouldn't the lower clock and higher multi equal a lower speed? Do most NBs use 400MHz as a target at stock?

Let's take my conroe as an example to see if I've got this straight. I'm running it at 3.2GHz (400x8). This means my NB clock is 67MHz and the multi is 6 (1066 strap). With my clock, the NB clock is 100MHz giving me a 600MHz NB?

How does this affect memory transfers? The ICH (NB) is mostly responsible for disk I/O, isn't it? Will disk I/O increase as well?

Cheers!

I suggest reading that article, more than once, it explains everything. If I were to try and explain it here it would basically be just re-stating what's there.
