Default 680i bios, unlocked multiplier question.

idk if this is the right place but i can't think of a better one. a friend of mine suggested to me recently that the engineering sample e6750 i gots might be unlocked. my bios say 6.7. or 8x multi. my question is this: are there other bios' out there for this lovely board that might take advantage of an unlocked multi? or: more likely :my friend is full of it... what do you guys think? thanks

Well if the ES E6750 is truly unlocked, you would be able to set the multi on this board without a problem. Your friend might not be accurate with the unlocked multi though. With the Conroes, not many of the ES samples were unlocked. Previous Intel ES chips from the Prescott line and older usually were unlocked.

I would say that if your bios will not let you set anything higher then 8x, it isnt unlocked.

Holy Cow! The Pencil Mod really is the best thing I have ever found!

I could not get my E8400 stable with my new 800Mhz RAM. Yeah kind of weird it was better with my DDR2-667, but anyway.

I had to put my BIOS at 1.3750 to account for the Vdroop and Vdrop on this EVGA 680i board, and it would still run at 1.320/1.328 under load. After the mod, 1.36250 in BIOS....and after Windows loads it shows 1.344 idle, launch Orthos and under full load its still 1.344. NO Vdroop!!!

The 680i is still a decent board, even for the wolfdales. Congats on the vdroop mod working out so well for you!

I just picked up a evga 680i se off ebay for 103 after shipping. Great deal, there are lots left also. comes with no accessories except i/o shield, but well worth it IMO, there are straight from evga. I am replacing my p5q with it, so i can sli. and because i hate intel chipsets with a passion now.

The latest bios is really good. As for the pencil mod, follow the instructions on the first post.

Good Luck!

First of all, hi

I have found 2 max stable OC's for my system. One is the highest CPU frequency (3510MHz = 9 x 390MHz) and the other one has the highest FSB frequency (3480MHz = 8 x 435MHz). I think that the higher FSB frequency is better than the high CPU frequency. Certainly as the difference in CPU frequency is only 30Mhz (just like a 386 in the 80's )

Can someone please confirm this, or is the high CPU frequency better?

A faster system bus does improve overall system performance, but your OCs are so close in comparison, i think only synthetic benches will tell you for sure. Try running some benchmarks and find out. I personally would run whichever OC allows for lower SPP voltage since it can get quite hot.
