Duckieho posted a thread on the 680i strap. By the way, he is a moderator at the EVGA forums. In my opinion he has the most credability of anyone! Sorry to those elite few that might know more then him!

Basically what these are showing is that the northbridge chipset has latency much like your ram. When you move up in FSB, it will move to a different "strap" and loosen the timmings so to speak. The graphs show the "FSB hole" as well. Basically you take a huge hit in performance between 1376MHz up to 1454MHz, and above 480 FSB. I plan on running a 400 - 450 FSB.

Is there any way that you can copy the other thread for the pencil mod onto this one. It is blocked for me.

These boards need a little TLC before you install them. First get yourself some AS cremique, AS5 works too but it is said that the AS5 is capacitive and can disrupt the electric properties of resistors so you have to be more carefull. Then remove the NB and SB cooler (attach 1), clean off the poor quality thermal paste, clean with alcohol, and apply your thermal paste. Second are the mosfets (attach 2), they have the black wave heatsinks on them. They too should be removes so that you can replace the thermal paste. There are additional cooling you can put on the chipsets that will make a difference.
They are:
NB: Thermaltake Spirit II, Thermalright HR-05 (you can mount 80mm fans on these)

SB: Thermalright HR-05 SLI (If your video card extends over the SB chip), or you can buy a fan directly from EVGA for your SB chipset (attach 3)
Here are some pics of the HR-05 SLI mounted on the board with a video card.
Quote:
I had two HR-05 SLIs on my 680i, and fit SLI 8800GTX also. Just couldn't fit an XFI along with them.

You might want to consider additional mosfet heatsinks since not all of them have a mounted heatsink. I picked up some individual heatsinks at performance-pcs.com, the microcool MC-MOSFET-BK fit best.

The reason why the mosfets are so important to keep cool is that when you increase voltage to the ram, they heat up and eventually fail. I would not recommend vdimm above 2.2v (I myself stay at 2.1v). I've seen people fry their memory controllers by going 2.3v and above, even though the manufacturer states it can handle 2.3v.
Here is a post at EVGA on the mosfets (the ones shown control the CPU).

more on the mosfet cooling at extremesystems

Good Luck!

The NVIDIA 600i series was promised to support the Penryn, and with the latest P30 bios update for the reference boards like EVGA, BGF, and XFX 680i, it is official.

Proof: EVGA Forums - post #12 from EVGA Rep

Official response:
Quote:
Yes, Penryn CPU's will work on the 680i motherboard.

However, a BIOS update will be needed for full functionality, this BIOS will be released in the near future.

Thanks,
EVGATech_JacobF
This is referring to the P30 bios release.

Edit: This post is not acurate. Only the Wolfdale dual core is supported on the 680i, not the Yorkfield quad core.

I would suggest lowering your multi to 6 and find your max FSB you can post at.

So are you saying that the pencil mod actually eliminates or reduces the FSB hole?

These boards are REALLY inconsistent, as I have a FSB hole (where my system will not even post) between 3.80GHz and 3.95GHz... But it will post at 4000-4100MHz (unstable)...

No, it will not. The vdroop merely reduces the amount normally experienced in Windows under load. It can also get your actuals closer to what is set in the BIOS.

Exactly, great answer. The vdroop mod reduces the amount of vcore needed to run the CPU because you dont have to run the vcore higher to compensate for the vdroop under load. Basically if the CPU runs 100% stable under load at 1.3v, You can actually set it at 1.3v and not 1.325v, which would drop to 1.3v with the vdroop. Where as without the vdroop mod, had you set it to 1.3v, under load it would have droped to 1.28v causing the computer to crash.

I tried this vdroop mod on my evga 680i and the vdroop got WORSE. BIOS has CPU voltage set at 1.4, CPU-Z reads it at 1.35. Any info as to what may be the issue??

Do you hae the A1/T1 revision or the AR/TR? How many passes with the pencil did you make? You only need 2-3 passes, thats a small amount. Note also that the vdroop is the amount of voltage vcore drops when under load. So if you Open CPU-Z and run orthos, how much does the voltage drop?
