790i will be DDR3. That alone will be a big issue given that for a decent set of DDR3, you need to spend serious money.

I haven't seen a single review yet (and I've been following closely) that recommends going DDR3 at this time. Not just pricing but also latencies on the ram. You can get a top set of PC8500 2 GB ram with Micron IC's right now for about $120. Good DDR3 is in the $500 range.

The main reason to go 780i is not for Tri-SLI or for PCI-E 2.0 but to have compatibility with 45nm quads. I agree that the QX9650 is pricey but in a couple of months when the low end quads come out, the purpose of this board will be vindicated (especially since we can keep our ram and not be forced to shell out big bucks)

Well depends on the person, i have to agree that DDR3 is shockingly expensive at the moment. But if your the sort of guy that can afford a QX9650....DDR3 prices shouldn't really bother you.

Me....well i am still considering the 780i (Not from a TRI SLI stand point as that idea is about as usual as a fart in the wind) i'm still undecided myself...i have been pondering over the Asus Striker II Formula 780i.

I was itching for the Asus too mate.. Problem is i had a buyer for my Striker Extreme last week and I couldn't pass up on selling it. The Asus is at least a month out.

The few online sites that have had access to the Asus P5N-T Deluxe specs are still maintaining that it will not have 45nm quad support

Is the board layout/chipset the exact same as the Striker Edition? If so you are correct, I recently tried building a rig for a customer with a Striker edition board and a QX9650...It would see the cpu, but said something like"Upgrade the bios to unlock the cpu's full power" and was clocked at 2.00ghz..

I thought the error msg was amusing myself and even trying the newest bios from asus still couldnt get it to work.

Worth is relative.
The QX9650 provides me the opportunity to possibly increase my 24/7 from 3.6 to 4.5. Not guaranteed, but early reports are promising.
In comparison, DDR3 has very little to offer me regarding performance over my current configuration.

ratt,

I think you'll find that once you hit 4.0, the going gets tough. you start to need ~1.5 vcore which is around where I start to get nervous about a $1k chip.

Mine is a L739A646.
Not enough of them out there yet to determine good/bad batch #s, if there is any.
Some threads at Xtreme are showing 4.4 at less than 1.4.
I hereby declare that you are not allowed to post any more clocks or scores until Robilar and I have our rigs up and running.
