Default 780i will run crossfire?
This may be a stupid question, but is it possible to get a nvidia 780i motherboard running crossfire, with two ATI 3870X2 cards?

No. 780i is nvidia chipset board. It is for SLI. If you want to do CF, you need intel chipset boards such as P35 and X38 etc.

Yet 2 3870X2 will outperform 3 way SLI with 8800 Ultras I'm fairly certain.

Get any board with X38 for crossfire.

No P35 for XFire. It is possable, but only 1 PCIE slot is 16x.
