Talking Stable

Well I got a stable overclock. I want to give a big thank you to 10acjed for all the help and questions I had. After several hours of playing with settings and fine tunning I came up with the following OC. 4.037

CPU Core 1.3625v
CPU FSB 1.4v
Memory 2.1v
SPP 1.5v

Memory was set at 1066 with 5 5 5 18 2T

I followed 10acjed guide and asked all the questions I needed. I got great response and lots of help. First timer for OCing and Building.

One thing that was on my bios and not his guide was the Execute Disable Bit. I disabled it with all the other things and it was confirmed by 10acjed. Now this is my system and I am not an expert. So if you dont know ask like I did. I would hate to see someone burn theirs up by going by my cpu.

I have played with over clocking my Video Cards before. I love the new EVGA Precision tool. I have 2 260 GTX FTW in SLI. I have them over clocked to 738-1512-1242. They work great for me.

The only two major things I encountered with this build. One I gave up on the raid. I will try again another day IF I desire. That or buy the new 20,000 rpm Velociraptor ,coming soon, and the stupid Realtech Sound onboard Sound Card and Drivers.

I play COD4 and kept on getting iw3mp.exe. Error. Plain and simple it was the realtech drivers. When I first built I tried to disable the Audio in the bios. Then my XFI card would not work. I had to enable, download the drivers, disable the bios, delete the drivers, reinstall XFI Drivers, Delete COD4 and reinstall. Just a short brief on hoops to go through. I tried it all something in the mic port. Renaming exe to bak. I think once I got the drives deleted and my card working right the bak started messing me up. This is why I had to do COD 4 again.

Anyways all works good now. See below for OCCT test and 3Dmark06 with current settings.

Im really suprised the E8500 wont go further, seems like it shoud do 4.2 easy at that voltage, looks like its going to slide downward as the E8400 did... 4.0-4.2 was the norm at first, now 3.6-3.8 is.. at least you got to 4.0..

Have you tried just lowering the CPU Voltage since everything is good??

I just think for 4.03GHz you wouldnt need more than 1.35v (bios)

just food for thought if you get bored and want to play around with it some more...

Good job on the rest...

Try the settings below in nvidia control pannel for SLI ... the only one that should be different is chang "Force Split Frame Rendering" to "Force Split Frame Rendering 2" it will help in games and benchmarks, probly get you past 20k on 3dmark

Great tip. It did improve my benchmark. Not over the 20k mark but almost.

Thank you.

I have just basically been reading this thread for a few weeks now checking out how to overclock my board and my q6600. I have followed most settings step by step and i've found i am getting some insane temperatures when i run OCCT. i'm putting in about 1.45 volts on the core and getting over 70C within the first three minutes of starting the test at 3.4Ghz. I've tried reseting the heatsink and AS5 and still no luck. Any ideas guys?

An Arctic Freezer 7 is not sufficiant for a Q6600

I am running a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme and 2 120mm fans on it, also both the TRUE and the Q6600 are lapped. My load temps at same settings as you are 60-62c..

Your going to need better cooling...

A TRUE will run you about $56 without fan.. Id add at least 1 120mm fan

Or Petras has Good Budget Water Cooling for around $150

Well thats not good news.
Yeah seemed to run my dual core very well but i guess when you add a couple cores it seems to heat things up pretty good.
I dont think i will water cool just because there is a chance it will leak and i dont want to deal with the upkeep.
what would be a good OC with the cooler that i have then?

Well if you stick with the AF7 Pro I would recommend a lapping job one of these weekends.

As for max OC with it, hard to say..... Id first drop it down to say 3.0 and 1.40v and see what happens in OCCT cpu test... if all is well and you feel you have some head room, bump it up to 3.1 and try again... its a try and fail thing, all cpu's are different.... But IMO if you lap the AF7 and you CPU you should be able to get 3.2 easy. My friend is running 3.25 on a 780i as we speak, load temps around 63-65c....

With the other cooler (TRUE) you can push it to 3.2 without lapping and 3.4-3.6 with lapping

Talking Hello.

Just a recap. I retested at 1.35volts on the CPU Core. Stable. For the 9700 Zalman I love mine. Newegg has it on sale right now. I paid $59.99 with free shipping. Love the look of the blue LED with the rest of my Antec 1200 Blue LED FANS. Old case was Red theme this one blue. LOL. Anyways as far as your needs I am a rookie 10acjed will have to answer that.

On another not I was redoing my old computers for resell. I had Vista 32bit on one never used it. Formated and XPed it. I redownloaded it. Never looked at it. Kind of cool. I liked how it read all 4 gigs of ram. Makes wonder about upgrading and trying to raid again. I here it is easier with Vista.

How does our board like Vista? My buddy got the same board. 750i ftw. Would not download. Had to spend several hours with tech and upgrade bios and blah blah blah. I think he bought a board with older bios. Must have been in the back of the stock. Mine had a new bios. The only reason I know is it only reads 2.75 gigs of ram. His read all 3 gigs. I know the newer bios only read 2.75.

How do you see what version of bios you have?

Later.....
