apparently it can. everything turned on for me as well, mobo lights, fans went on, gpu fan was also on, dvd rom even lit up, but no display. and all i did was take everything out to clean it

. some way or another i shorted my motherboard, and i still have no idea how. i guess its just one of those unexplained freak occurrences.

edit: have you tried using the other pci-e slot for your graphics card? maybe the pci-e slot was damaged.

Well i tried with no graphics card and saw no activity lights on either way. I just dont think it fried itself and have moved no metal in the case to short it. I just dont get how a shorted mobo would power everything fine but not post the cpu. Could the problem maybe be bent pins?

it certainly could. but then why does the gpu not function when the other fans work, and so does the board? also you said you lapped your cpu, i doubt you went to far on the lapping job, but it could have done something to it. have you tried re-seating the cpu? just trying to go through all alternatives here.

Ok i totally striped it out of the case and reset up ontop of a box for a ground. Now the ram is responding but nothing as far as a post. I have tried different video cards and also i have a saitek keyboard that lights up before it posts and that doesnt light either. Retried different cpus and ram. Will be getting a new mobo on monday since 4th of july messed up what i planned to have here friday

All in all i get everything showing a working computer accept the acctual post, so is that the systems of a dead motherboard..idk.

When moving around and generally messing with my p5n32 (had 2, I don't have them anymore), I found the bios generally was finicky - actually changing itself several times. I would recommend a deep bios reset as another test, before getting a new board, as you may be experiencing the same thing.

Unplug the computer and the motherboard, take out the battery, set the CMOS clear jumper for 20-30min, wait..... reassemble.
