I've owned both the rampage extreme and the evga 790i ultra. both are DDR3 and both are in my opinion a waste of money.

If you want SLI, go with the 780i FTW. It has vdroop control and solid caps. Get a really solid set of DDR2 (not 4x1 though, Nvidia boards don't like it) and you will be set.

My 780i FTW actually got higher FSB than both my rampage extreme and 790i ultra.

I'd suggest the mushkin Extreme series or G.sKills

hmm rob, i would really like ddr3 1:1 for OCing. do the 780i's not support ddr3? are there not enough benefits of ddr3 over 2?

intel or AMD? probably a dumb question, but you didn't include in your specs. I just have to make sure were not gonna get sued by a guy who doesn't know AMD from Intel.

Why? The 5 or so sets of DDR3 I have tested have never membenched faster than really good DDR2 at low latencies.

A good set of ddr2 2x2 gb will do close to 1150mhz at 5-6-6-12 timings.

Nothing in DDR3 (except the uber 2000mhz stuff) is faster

790i, I was just reading up on the intel i7 since it was mentioned, and I hope to heaven that Intel hasn't started the i craze in thier work too. We already have the ipod, iphone, irack (shelving, I think...), and the iran (definetely a tennis shoe, but why is it on the news so often?)

I was just lookin' at Rob's CPU and I'm wondrin why he spent the extra $50 or so for an E86 instead of an E84. You can OC them to the point it doesn't matter which is which (in most cases, but not on my board...)

Exactly. IMO DDR3 will be useless until either the timings improve or 600 FSB boards become the norm.

I change CPU's pretty frequently.

Also the E8600 is an E0 stepping. The E8500 and E8400 are not. It makes a difference in temps and voltages at the top end.
