I don't understand what all these are for and especially the difference between CHA_FAN and OPT_FAN on my motherboard.
I think PWM Is for the PSU, is this correct? If so, how come my PSU didn't come with a connection for it? And what exactly are the differences between CHA_FAN and OPT_FAN

PWM is referring to the cpu fan. PWM automatically changes the fan speed based on how hot the cpu is. I'd guess CHA_FAN is for "chassis", which would be a case fan. OPT_FAN I'm not sure on.

What if I don't connector my CPU fan controller to the PWM then, will the fan spin at 100 percent at all times?

If your fan supports PWM, then you'll have the option in bios to either turn it on, or set a manual speed.

On my Commando (Asus) it has a total of 7 fan connections.
CPU for the Processor PWR has to be hooked up. It is for the fan at the rear of the case, so to pull the hot air from around your CPU. <-{Fan}--[CPU] Case fans can be plugged into any of the others. The OPT fans should work with thermal probes that are locate beside the respective fan connection. : fan : TD :Fan :TD (TD being Thermal Probe or sensor.) When setting any of the fan speeds using AI or Probe II it will adjust the fans speed, that are connected, when needed.

But my CPU fan isn't connected to the PWM, just the CPU plug, is this OK? I'm really not interested in dynamic speeds, I just want it to be 100 percent at all times. Would this be the case if I don't plug it in to the PWM slot?

CPU_FAN = Just that, the CPU fan
CHA_FAN = Chasis Fan OPT_FAN = Optional Fan PWM Mode is the % the fan speed can be set tofor the Chasis fan. settings are: 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100

For the rampage Formula, the board will post without a fan plugged into the CPU_FAN header, but a message will pop up stating your CPU fan is not being detected. I am WCing my CPU and dont use it... So all I had to do is go into the bios and under the Hardsware Monitor, set the CPU fan to ignore.
As for the specific fan headers, they just allow for specific bios control (as noted in previous post were you can set the fan speed in % with the CHA_FAN). So the board will boot without any fans plugged into a header. Here is the motherboard manual for download: http://dlsvr.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/so...nual_E3559.zip Here is a screenshot of the Rampage Formula motherboard layout with the headers labeled: ![]() Here is some more info on the CHA_FAN and OPT_FAN headers:

Oh yes, I meant PWR, not PWM, mistake. I have nothing plugged into it, everything seems to work fine.
And yes, I have the manual and read it, it explains nothing about the differences between OPT and CHA. I understand they can be used interchangably but I'm just curious what the exact differences are. I guess only CHA can control fan speeds, OPT can't? Maybe CHA is for regular fans, while OPT is for small fans like 40mm or something to cool the chipset, which doesn't need dynamic speeds? So what about the PWR one?
