So I just upgraded my motherboard from an MSI P45 Neo-F to a P5Q Pro, and I must say, I am very excited about the trade. (I hope I was right)
![]() The OC is infinately more stable (I had a hard time getting my e8400 to 3.3 on the MSI crap, and now 3.6 was a breeze - I'm thinking of joining the 4.0 club soon, on the stock cooler!) Anyway, the problem is that while the OC when up a notch or twenty, my hardware is experiencing other problems now. ![]() [[edit]] btw, sincere apologies if these answers are elsewhere in the forum - I did look, but maybe not hard enough... ===========TWO QUESTIONS ON THIS POST================= first, I have 2 hdds. a 160 and a 640 (both sataII) pluged into the red ports (1 and 2) The bios seems to have 3 spots for boot devices. a floppy, a cd rom, and ONE HARD DISK. this seems to be a problem, since I have 2 hdds, and no floppy... ![]() Is there a "boot from other device" option? or somesuch where you can hit F11 durring bootup to get to pick from a list of bootable devices? How can you boot from a USB stick?? What abot my zipslack?!?! Under the option for boot order, is a hard disk order thingy. Both of my disks show up here, but I have to order them (kind of like master/slave for sata??). Only the hdd that I label as disk 1 shows up in the boot order. I can switch it back and forth, but this is not a happy or fun time for me. SECOND QUESTION (unrelated) I have 2x2 gigs of corsair xms2 (5,5,5,18 at 800). I got a deal on newegg for the new mobo and 2x2 more gigs of ram, but these are 5,4,4,18 (still at 800). Can I possible run them on seperate channels? or maybe all at the loosest timings? My BIGGEST problem is the corsair runs at 1.8v and the Fata1ity runs at 2.1v. ![]() UGH. I hope I can hack it, lol. 8 gigs would be sweet for Photoshop CS4... ![]() ==========End of rant============== So thanks, in advance, for anyone's help!! It is Much appreciated.

First you shloud not have a problem running your ram at higher timings 5-5-5-18@800Mhz with the mixed batch.
Next in your BIOS you should be able to select your boot order. You don't have a floppy so #1 would be either your CD or DVD drive or your HDD with the OS on it. Your second HDD should show up in Windows in My Computer as D: drive where you can use it for whatever you want. What are your voltages set at when OCing? Edit: I just noticed that your using stock cooling for your CPU. I would not try going any higher then your at now as you will run into heat issues if you have not already.

When OCing the ram? stock 1.8 (I'm only using the 2x2 xms2 now) OC for 8400? 1.2625 in bios.
The problem is that I don't care if HDD2 shows up in my comp, I want it to be bootable (win64 on my 640 gig and maybe slackware on my 160 gig.) Also, my ram concern was less about the caS Timings and moreso about voltages (the corsair runs at 1.8 and the Fatal1ty runs at 2.1v) can I control the dram voltages independently? Or at least by channel if not by dimm?

No you can't control the ram voltages slot to slot. One voltage for all. I would try playing around with the higher voltage ram to see how low of voltage they can run at stable and see if you can get it down to around 1.95v.
I may be wrong on this one but, I believe you need to make the HDD bootable by either installing a OS or some sort of bootable program? Maybe someone else can add or correct me on that one.

you don't think the 1.95 will fry my 1.8 Xms2?

Nope but, that is a choice you have to make. Most ram can handle a little extra voltage like .1-.2v. Like I said you may want to play with the higher voltage ram to see how low of voltage it will run stable on. I have had some 2.2v ram run at stock settings on 1.9v without issues and some of the same ram that needed 2.1v to stay stable.
Are both kits 4Gb's? Or is one 4Gb's and the other 2Gb's? I

both kits are 2x2. That sounds like a good idea, though - I'll install the 2.2v ram kit and ease it down. If I can get it below 1.9, then I'll just do that. I may be able to control the timing independently, though... es posible? also, if I'm OCing, cutting the voltage on the one kit might be detrimental. Might need to sell one kit and match it all up... I'll see what I can do though - thanks for the help so far. (++rep
)======Still hurting on the dual boot front btw=========

Update - I got the kits working in tandem, but they will only run at 667 so far. Apparently (according to CPU-Z) my 2.1v ram will run at 1.8 at 400 mhz (aka 800) with 6-6-6-18 timings (I think thats what it meant in the chart under memory in cpuz...)
So I set in the bios for the ram to run at 1.8v, and set timings to 6-6-6-18 (or 6-6-6-20) and 800 (or 801 for my 3.6ghz OC) and it won't POST... Even at 667 I saw a considerable boost in performance in vista with the 8 gig vs 4 gig, but I think I would be happier if I could run them at 800... Maybe I'll try 768 (or whatever 333 clocks to with a 400 fsb...) Should I worry myself with FSB termination voltage? might that help? I also tried the pair of kits up to 1.98v, but no go, and I really don't want to fry my corsairs (that I spent like 80 bucks on). Thanks for the help so far!

so I'm back to my single kit of 2x2gig corsair, and maybe I'll just have to sell a kit and match the other. I'd love a second opinion on this though.
Does the CPUZ tab that has the table about speed, timing, and voltage "options" for each dimm slot "recomend" those settings? is that what thats about?

so I've decided on purchasing another 2x2g of corsair xms2 (as opposed to another 2x2 of the Fatal1ty OCZ). I just feel that the Fatal1ty must be crap because it looks cooler. ;-) the timings are a tad better on the OCZ, but the corsair 2x2 is 25 after mir right now...
Someone stop me if I'm being stupid... I'm picking Corsair XMS2 over Fatal1ty. Help me out!
