I didn't see a thread about this (used search and everything
). I just assembled my system (sig rig) and have just started trying to get a good OC.So far I have been a little frustrated. After getting my ram to run at 1600 I started trying to work on a basic OC. I raised my vcore to 1.35, vdimm to 1.64, and +.1 to QPI and left most of the rest alone. I started with a 14x multi just to test bclk and was actually doing ok, hit 193 x14 and got a full boot to vista. After that I dropped it back down to 183, booted, then started raising the multi. At this point I just got stuck in boot loops and couldn't even reproduce the 183x14 which was very obnoxious... Anyone had some successes so far? Any nice tips/tweaks out there?

What BIOS version are you using?
__________________Have you tried just letting it sit for a few minutes. Gigabyte X58s tend to need to boot a few times to get sorted when significant settings are changed.

I had to head off to work, but I'll get the bios ver when I get home...
I've had it just sit there and not boot loop a few times, how long is "a couple minutes" ?

Ok I'm on bios revision F5 (just updated it)
This was the "base" setup I was trying to get to boot, and it just boot loops: Multi: x12 Bclk: 160 QPI: x36 Uncore: x16 PCI-X: 100 Memory Multi: x10 Vcore: 1.25v QPI: 1.44v IOH: 1.1v Dram: 1.64v PLL: 1.8v All other voltages set to auto. Disabled: Turbo CIA2 C1E C3/C6/C7 EIST What the heck am I missing here?

Memory multiplier is too high for the uncore multiplier.
__________________You cannot run the memory faster than one quarter the real clock (or one-half the DDR clock) of the uncore. In other words, the way Gigabyte lables things, you need the uncore multiplier to be at least double the memory multiplier. If you want DDR-1600, you are going to need 3.8GHz, or more, on the uncore for a stable system. 160x16 is too slow an uncore clock for the memory controler to keep up with the setting you are trying to use for your memory. Also, 1.44v QPI is bordering on the excessive, but you might need near that level for 3.8GHz+ uncore and 12GiB of memory, if you have an average, or below average i7 920.

Do some reading on the i7 and the 1366 platform as it is a bit different than previous systems. There's a lot more too look at. Once you understand the platform better though you come back to the same thing OCing has always been...how much heat can you dissipate and how many volts are you willing to stuff into it ![]() Good luck with your system and if you want some suggested articles to read I can send some, just ask.

I've actually tried to spend the last day or so doing a lot of reading up on this platform. As you guys pointed out, I immediately saw the uncore -> memory relationship that I was not aware of.
My goal right now was to get a stable base together so that I could begin testing higher settings. Here is what I've done: vcore: 1.30 QPI/VTT: 1.32 DRAM: 1.64 PLL: 1.88 I dropped the multi down to 14, set memory at 8x and QPI at 16x. Using base bclk the system boots and is stable. Then I start pushing the bclk 10 mhz at a time and the system seems to do just fine with it up to 183 or so. However, as soon as I change the multi to ANYTHING different, the system cold boots and will not post. Is this some kind of issue with gigabyte boards? It seems that I can make any change that soft boots the system and it works fine regardless of whether it's stable or not, and then as soon as it cold boots for any reason it will boot loop and go back to default bios settings... I don't feel like I'm trying anything too out there, just getting frustrated...
