Default Computer locks up and won't turn back on

I'm having a very strange problem with my computer. The other day I went to use my computer and it wouldn't turn on at all. No fans, no beeps, nothing. However the light on the motherboard was on. Some searching revealed that the likely problem was a failed power supply so I got a new one. Both the new and old power supplies are 500 watts.

So I hook everything up and the computer starts up fine and resumes my previous session (it was hibernating before I replaced the power supply) but locks up after about 5 minutes of use. The power and reset buttons don't do anything. So I turn off the computer from the switch on the power supply. But now the computer won't come on again.

I come back after about 30 minutes and try to turn it on again and lo and behold it starts up. But this time I get some weird error at startup about how overclocking has failed and the BIOS settings have been reset to default (I have never overclocked my computer). After this it boots to Windows. But then it locks up after about 15 minutes. I manually shut it off again and it won't come back on.

So 30 minutes later I come back and it turns on and boots to Windows. This time I clean my registry to see if that helps and restart the computer. It seems to work fine for about an hour and then I leave to go do some things. When I come back I see a blue screen. So I turn it off again and of course it won't come back on.

When I can finally get it to come back on it works fine for about 5 hours with no problems and then I shut it off for the night. The next day it still seems to be working fine but then it starts locking up after a couple of minutes after it boots to Windows.

What could be the problem???

taking a shot in the dark, but if you used a new power supply and you are still having problems with it shutting off and not working properly (bsod's), it may be a motherboard issue. With the constant shut offs randomly, and bios issues that seems like what could be wrong with your issues. I dont know a great deal specifically what could be wrong with the motherboard, because i dont know what model motherboard you have. Perhaps the voltage regulator could be failing you.

The computer isn't shutting off, it locks up. I have to shut it off manually from the power supply. I only had the BIOS error once. The motherboard is an MSI but I don't know the model. I got the computer last January.

First, fill out your system specs. That'll be very helpful in determining what your issue might be.
As for not powering up with the button, next time it does that, try unplugging the cord from the PSU and plugging it back in. I've had a system not want to power up and I just flipped the switch on my PSU off then back on and it fired right up.

As for the blue screen error (BSOD), did you happen to write down the code (0x0000001) or the name of the error. The name is usually written in all caps spaced by underscores.

EDIT: I was thinking that your memory could also be causing your lock up issues.

ok, well you should first find out what parts you have in it. Is it a prebuilt from a company, or you bought it from someone?

I have to turn off the switch on the power supply to get it to turn off after it locks up. But turning the switch back on and pressing the power button doesn't work unless the computer "rests" for a while. Once I left the power switch on and the computer came back on its own after leaving it for an hour.

I changed out the power cord with the one that actually came with the new power supply. I figured they were all the same.

Anyway the computer started up okay and has been running for about 10 minutes so we'll see.

Okay, computer worked for about 30 minutes. I stepped away to make a phone call and I came back and none of my USB devices were working (this actually happened the first time I started the computer after I replaced the power supply). So I tried to shut down the computer and it locked up before I could get the start menu open.

Since my computer won't come back on I'll have to fill out the specs from memory but they won't be very specific. It was customized, but not a name brand.

Sounds like either your CPU is over heating or your mainboard is defective. If the fan doesn't work you'll need to replace it. If the mainboard needs to be replace then you'll the exact same type. If i were you I'd find a way to back up all your data and prepare for the worst.

Test out memory module configs... but it's likely a busted motherboard. If all else fails, put the motherboard on your head and take pictures. It will be entertaining to OCN.

Fans are working fine (when the computer is running). I had a feeling it might be the motherboard.

But what would cause computer to start working again after letting it sit for a while?
