What I think the problem is, is that I think my motherboard is fried.
I remember a faint burning smell, and I pray to god that it isn't my processor because it was $200. (2.4 Core 2 Quad) BUT, I do not think that it is my processor because this is what happens. I will turn my system on and it like turns on, makes this clicking noise, and basically just starts over. What I mean is, it doesn't completely shut off..it almost "skips". If the processor were fried, it would not turn on would it? Read on though about the processor. Every thing I try is different. The other power supply I swapped in just turns on and off. My CPU fan also does not work. If I am correct, the CPU fan will connect to those 3-pin places. I have tried using both on my motherboard (because there are 2, from what I understand) with the fan, and nothing. I also have tried hooking up my 120mm fan to it, because it has the optional connector to use a 3-pin or to a standard molex (Is that right?) from the power supply. Still, nothing. I tried moving around the RAM, putting 1 stick in at a time, rearranging them, and etc. Did not make a difference. I am not certain if this is true, but if you have no memory in the computer, it should come up with a beep code correct? I did that, and I'm 99% sure it did not beep. This is another clue that I think my motherboard is fried. I also have tried switching out the processor, and put in a different one from my old build. (2.2 Core 2 Duo) What this one (2.2 Core 2 Duo) does is it turns on and off, if I remember right. I really don't think it's the processor. I also tried swapping video cards, and it did absolutely nothing. I think I am right in the fact that the motherboard is fried. If you can think of any other ways to test that my motherboard may be fried, please do notify me. |

If you've tried absolutely everything except a new mobo, then it probably is the mobo.

If that is right, yes. I left it out for hours. Still didn't change a thing. |

Yep, that's a CMOS reset. Did you try another graphics card, or even the onboard graphics?

If taking the CMOS battery out and resetting your bios with your jumper doesn't fix the problem....Maybe you need a replacement bios chip or you could have burned out component/s on the motherboard(capacitors, etc..).

Then it probably is the motherboard. Can you try all of your components with another board?

Which motherboard are you running? Did you connect the 4/8 pin ATX power connector?

Sounds like you fried one of the Power Capacitors that is in the power to CPU curcuit.. Bad smell is either a resistor, capacitor, or a transformer.. None are ever good. Sorry for your board man. BTW.. It was stated not too long ago that it is very unlikely that you ever burn up a CPU unless you just don't put a heatsink on it and overclock it to 5 ghz.
