Default What could possible happen if I overclock memory and motherbaords dont support?

So basically topic says nearly all, but the question is.

I just found out my mother board only supports DDR2 MAX 800MHz.

My CPU is clocked @ 3.2GHz - Some bios memory setting is 1:1 so the memory is clocked at 800MHz.

What happens if I clock my CPU to like 3.8GHz, the memory will of course get clocked higher..

Does it effect the memory, or will it simply stay @ 800MHz?

If memory is linked then yes the RAM will increase. On my notebook I increase FSB from 266Mhz (1066Mhz) to 300Mhz (1200Mhz) RAM goes from 800Mhz to 900Mhz. 800Mhz is also my "max" RAM.

If your memory can overclock, then it will probably be just fine. Most boards that I have used will go higher then the rated speed.

well nothing to the motherboard you might have to up the nb voltage but your ram would have to be able to handle it. You probly will have to drop the ram divider to keep it close to 800 cause your ram probly wont run 1000mhz.

Im not going to clock my current set. Getting OCZ Blade 8500 (1066mhz) in the end of next week, I was just thinking if I needed to get myself a new mother board or if I could use the one I've got now..

So I should be able to use the current motherboard, right? Even though the tech spec say that it will maximum take 800MHz memory chips..

What you could do if you want to OC your CPU and remain within spec is to drop your RAM to DDR2-667. This changes the divider and lets you pull your CPU speeds up. I'll be using this trick to run my RAM at DDR2-800 @ 3.4 GHz.
