Default Can you install MOBO/GFX drivers without an OS?

Here is the situation, unfortunately none of the rigs are in my profile.

Moving HDD (with OS) from 7 year old (sock 478) P4 3.2GHz HT/Gigabyte P865/9600 XT/DDR 400MHz rig to an Athlon X2 5000/nForce430/DDR2 rig.

P4 HT PC with HDD works fine.
X2 5000 PC with HDD BSODs mid-way through win XP loading screen (before log on. The black screen with windows flag and blue loading bar) and restarts.

BSOD is far too quick to see. I suspect it has something to do with the HDD not having the X2 5000 PC's GFX or MOBO drivers installed.

Doesn't have a disk drive, so would have to put chipset & onboard GFX card drivers on a USB stick but thats no problem.

TLDR version:

Can I install MOBO & GFX drivers without going into windows?

I suspect that may need a "special" bootable version of the drivers. Can I image the driver disk to a USB stick?

Many thanks to all who read this, and hopefully reply

When you go through POST, hit F8 and select "Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure". That should stop the PC from automatically rebooting on the BSOD and should let you get a look at the error code. Let me know if that doesn't work.

There is no way that I know of to load drivers without going into Windows, simply because the installation programs need to have access to modify the Windows Registry.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have questions.

thanks for the reply. Have seen a "halt on all errors" option, but it's an OEM PC so options are very limited. Will have a look.

Could be a bit stuck then, OEM PC so no installation disk for XP. There is a "repair" disk, but that doesn't have the whoel copy of windows on it...

Thanks again

EDIT: Actually, for that matter. Straight off, I want to say I know this is not clever: boot OS with P4 rig & install nvidia chipset drivers & nvidia GFX drivers. Then turn it off, chuck HDD in newer rig and bobs your uncle?

Bear in mind the P4 rig has an intel chipset and ATI GFX.

Can you put the HDD back in the other PC and unload the drivers? that might prevent the BSOD. Typically if you're moving an HDD with an OS still on it, you either need to unload the drivers before-hand or reinstall the OS. Vista and Win 7 are a little better about that, but XP unfortunately isn't. Who's the manufacturer on that OEM?

Fujitsu siemens is the P4 OEM. The 5000+ has a Dell MOBO. If I can find the original driver disks, then I'll give that a go.

If I can't find the original disks I won't unload the drivers, since I don't fancy my chances of finding drivers for a P865 & 9600 XT in 2009

Is If I "unload" them can I use the "revert to previous driver" option? If I can use that twice then this may work... Anyway, I'll look for the original driver disk.

You shouldn't need the original driver disks. ATI has drivers on their website, you just have to look for them. As for the mobo, that might be another story.

As for the XP disk, is it for your Dell PC?

Yeah I look on the ATI site, and sure enough they still go back to the Radeon 7000 and VE series

the XP disk was from the Fujitsu Siemens. It is a recovery disc, not an install disk.

The install disc that came with the dell is being used on my current computer (I phoned that hotline to verify vista after changing MOBO. Although interestingly it didn't care about the new MOBO, it only un-verified itself during the SP1 install)

I uninstalled the ATI drivers and used the default windows ones. Still got a BSOD mid-way through loading XP. I *think* I saw the words "hardware error" but i doubt i did (Fujitsu w/ HDD works fine. Dell with a different HDD & OS worked fine last time I used it. So all hardware is accounted for.)

don't know how to uninstall MOBO drivers. In device manager the only P865 drivers I can see are to uninstall the "CPU to AGP link" and something else sounding equally as crucial.
